I think that it looks worse now than it really is. Their biggest problem really was depth. They lost Buchholz and Matsuzaka for more than half a season each. Lackey just kinda shit the bed and he's a whole other issue. The best that Tito had to work with was Andrew Miller (a huge disappointment for me, personally) and Wakefield (who can pitch next year if he wants, just please not in Boston) who were unmitigated disasters. It's easy to look at what the Yankees got out of Colon, Garcia and Chavez and wonder why the Sox couldn't catch some of that luck, but that's not the issue. They didn't need a #2 or #3 starter, and they still don't.

What they really need is another guy or two who can come in to the rotation and give them 175 innings of respectable, effective pitching. It's easy to point out in hindsight that that's what this team lacked but going into the year we were looking at 5 solid dependable guys in the rotation who weren't really going anywhere.

Now we're looking at Beckett-Lester-Buchholz again going into next year and what they need to find first and foremost is a guy to put ahead of Lackey (if they decide to keep him in the rotation). The offense is in decent shape, the only spot they're really lacking in is RF and SS. I hope Reddick gets an opportunity to compete for right field and think Scutaro should be welcomed back if Reddick doesn't get a shot (would be nice to improve one spot at least).

TL;DR I guess my point is that they don't need a huge overhaul. They just need those extra pieces. I hope that with the money they have to spend they use it on a dependable fourth or fifth starter and finding more than one guy to stash away in AAA in case of emergency. Tito isn't the problem and I don't think Theo would leave his "dream job" after a shaming like that.
