Rookie Posts: 57 06/08/11 3:55 PM	Tags : None This is my first post in a long time but I lurk daily. Can anyone with more knowledge than me give me the 411 on this kid? I've read the scouting report but was wondering if we can start to get a bit excited about him. Seems to be ranked really low considering his age and production. Veteran Member Posts: 1475 06/08/11 4:05 PM	Well if you look at his track record, there wasn't much indication that he had this level of production in him. That said, IIRC he was killing it like this in the last few months of the 2010, so I wonder if he made some sort of mechanical adjustment mid-season to harness additional power. Per the SP.com scouting report, he has a nice swing though modest plat discipline (this latter point supported by his stats), but he doesn't strike out all that much either. Given his move from 2B to a corner OF position, his bat will have to carry him. Most of his struggles last year were from early BABIP troubles, and his explosion was the result of, as you might expect, just the opposite. He ended the year below his typical level from '09 and '08, but I can't really say he's had much in the way of time to set his personal level there, or if there's even any reason to think that particular stat acts the same in the minors as it does the majors. His BABIP is back up this year, around the .340 level it was at in Lancaster, but it's hard to ignore the sudden pop.

(24 games): .322/.378/.566, 9 2B, 4 HR April '11 (11 games): .225/.279/.325, 4 2B May '11 (24 games): .310/.352/.655, 9 2B, 6 HR Not sure about the prospect status, but he's certainly showed improvement as the last two seasons have progressed.

Rookie Posts: 9 06/08/11 9:23 PM	Having seen him for the last season and a half, Chiang got some murderous breaks at the beginning of last year (the poor BABIP). That said his swing has looked less noisy (less leg kick, better control of his power load) and he's really been driving the ball. Has a tendency to lose his swing for games at a time though.

Rookie Posts: 3 06/09/11 7:37 AM	Chiang was listed on BA's prospect depth chart after 2007 and 2008, then was dropped off when he hit .264 / .323 / .415 for Salem in 2009, the year he was converted to the OF. But he was actually at .226 / .286 / .340 in his first 231 PA into late July, then in his last 96 went .356 / .417 / .598. So I watched him carefully all last year and wasn't surprised by the monthly splits, and was again disappointed when he was omitted from BA's depth chart. He now has a roughly 100 point lead in both OPS and SA over other EL guys who are 23 or younger. That's amazing for a supposed non-prospect. *There is no question that there is an unseen world. He's got a rocket arm, but tends to get bad jumps and take bad routes on fly balls. Should be noted that Chiang will be Rule 5 eligible this year.

I think his raw power is up there with Lavarnway and Middlebrooks to be honest. He makes impressive contact but he does need to work some on his approach and his glove in RF. Overall I really like how his bat has grown just over this year as he is really starting to tap into his power.

Before tonight's slaughtering of Matt Harvey, Chiang's line sat at .309/.363/.618/.981 and he led the Eastern League in OPS as a 23 year old. From the batting stats page on this site, his BABIP is a reasonable .337 with a .309 IsoP. K% of 17.8% and BB% of 7.0% aren't terrible but he could stand to see a few more pitches. .413wOBA isn't shabby either. He impressed me with his raw power when I saw him, (I didn't forsee a .309 IsoP but when he gets a hold of one it really goes) and he seemed to be slowing the game down more every time I saw him. I'm not exactly sure what his ceiling/floor is but it has been a blast following him this year.

He looks nothing like that in these videos though. We watched him for six games over two series in A+ a few years back in San Jose and Visalia. A slap hitter he's not, and I don't think he had that reputation even then. He had gap power, though it's become more than that what with the home runs. When we saw him, he lacked discipline. He gave away at bats too often, and ended up trying to hit the pitcher's pitch. But he was quite capable of launching mistake pitches. I have a feeling that's not all he's hitting these days. That's less than the times I had sex this month, and this is a 6 year relantionship, so that number of good offensive years is pretty damn low.
