Veteran Member Posts: 227 12/18/10 6:43 PM	Tags : None So who do you all think has the best shot at a Tejada-like comeback season in 2011? I'm thinking in terms of jumping 20+ spots after dropping significantly. I think the best four candidates would be Almanzar, Renfroe, Gibson, and Hissey. All four were ranked in the top 20 at one point, all were expected to struggle initially by most, and all have plummeted in the prospect rankings as a result. I'll pick Hissey, mostly out of stubborness after ranking him somewhere in the top 15 back 8-10 months ago. He's not even in the top 60 currently. Hopefully a lack of strength is what held him back in 2010, and that he's added a significant amount this offseason.

Veteran Member Posts: 44 12/18/10 6:57 PM	Not what you were looking for really but I think Lars is due to come back big this year. We know his head is always god only knows where and I think the pressure of being a big time prospect got to him and that's why he struggled through injury so stubbornly two years ago. The emergence of Rizzo with his glove made him realize that he needed to work on his glove work as well so I think that was his main focus last year. If you take out his injury plagued 2009 he started 2010 the way we expected him to start 2009 in Portland and made the transition up to AAA focusing on his defense. With the trade for A-gon he knows he's probably not the firstbaseman of the future here so I think his brain is going to relax a little and let his inner talents shine

I'll throw one name out there; while I'm not sure how much of a top prospect he's ever going to be considered, I could see Mark Wagner flying back up the charts next year after a lost 2010 season. Veteran Member Posts: 66 12/18/10 7:20 PM	20 spots is a huge jump but, on that criteria, I would nominate Keury De La Cruz, Henry Ramos, Junichi Tazawa. I have seen both De La Cruz and Ramos in the GCL and they both stood above the crowd to me. De La Cruz makes consistent contact and has surprising pop for someone his size. Ramos, however raw, has superior native power. Neither is in the top 40 prospects. Tazawa is coming off injury that I think robbed him of a few mph on his fastball and he has good secondary stuff. I think he may re-emerge as a possible bullpen/spot starter later in the year in the event of attrition at the ML level.

Not sure that's what he was driving (and I know you acknowledged this) but agree 100%. The chances of Boston going the whole year without a DL trip for either Varitek or Salty seems unlikely. Someone will need to step up. If Wagner can just figure out to hit ML pitching just a little bit, he'll be at the very least a nice backup catcher. Great defense, good approach/plate discipline. Another interesting catcher to watch along the same lines is Fedex. One of the Speier podcast guests (I think it was Keith Law) named him as the most likely C in the Sox system to have a good major league career (something to this effect, I'm paraphrasing). Again, if he can ever figure out the offensive end at all, he could be really good. I think he will eventually. Veteran Member Posts: 773 12/18/10 8:26 PM	Derrik Gibson is a guy that will re-emerge, a middle infielder that has demonstrated good plate discipline at all levels he's been at. Just have to hope he had a poor development year with bad luck, but the ability to judge strikes and balls will take him far.

He could emerge into the OF sub conversation in late 2011 IMO. If they didn't think he could emerge then why sign him in the first place? 2) Hazelbaker He appears to work hard at improving his game. He's got some tools. Maybe he reaches the top 10 before year end? His power is emerging some but his attitude is probably his biggest asset. From all indications, this young man is clearly giving it his all. 3) Ramos He absolutely could be a sleeper and emerge this coming year as a proto stud! He has a history of athletic excellence and should continue to learn and improve IMO. 4) Vinicio I know it sounds crazy, as he is SO YOUNG but he could emerge even this year to slap .300 and give some decent defense while stealing 30-40 bases at a good percentage. Would that take him up 20 positions? Maybe! I like both Coyle and Cecchini for 10 positon bumps. They both have a strong shot to be top 10 at year end IMO, at least on my list! Probably top 10 on soxprospects within 18 months.

I thought of both Brentz and Tazawa, but didn't suggest them as candidates because they're ranked #21 and #19 respectively. I'd say most would not consider either Tazawa's '09 or wiped out '10 a disappointment performance wise. Brentz flopping at Lowell wasn't much of a shock considering his "grip it and rip it" approach, and that he'd likely need to break some of his old habits the hard way. These two guys are still on the radar. David Mailman was more along the lines of what I was thinking. I think that it is too soon for Vinicio, he is still very young and needs to grow physically but he'll show glimpses of what he could be if everything falls the right way. I hope guys like Almanzar, Renfroe, Gibson comeback strong but I don't have nothing I could hang my hat on and say that I think they'll do it. To answer the main question I'll say that Tejeda takes the jump into elite prospects in the system. I got the sense from the Mike Hazen interview with Alex Spier that they weren't as disappointed as we were that it took so long for Tejeda to start producing. They still have big hopes for him, I saw a couple of games of his last year on video and his hands were very impressive I could see more HR power in there. Hopefully my prediction comes true for him. Am Dominican and you??

Both he and Vinicio probably need some time to adjust since they are so young but Bogaerts hasn't tasted the US at all yet. The fact that Vinicio held his own in the US already was very impressive to me. Bogaerts might be the better prospect overall though physically. I was thinking that Vinicio was more advanced defensively and he probably had a better chance to at least hit in the US next year. Neither really fit the spirit of the reemergence question though. I condensed it down to just a 20 position jump potential instead. Brentz was also a guy who had the potential to jump big but 262 AB with an under .200 Ave? It might just be that he is a slow learner. I thought it best to give him more time before expecting a 20 position jump. I also considered Brandon Jacobs and Miles Head. It's a roll of the dice in many ways.

Veteran Member Posts: 154 12/19/10 12:40 AM	Ramos hasn't played that much baseball right but he did well, as a young guy in the US. Pretty decent average, pop and OBP. Probably as likely as anyone to jump IMO. I just have a hunch with Hazelbaker. This is a guy who stole 63 bases and had major improvement overall last year, with a substantial jump in OPS on a team where no one seemed to be able to put up good offensive numbers. He is 23 though but appears to maybe be a late bloomer.

However, based on the question posed, I would put forward Fife as pitcher and Renfroe as position player. Each of them were ranked fairly high a year ago, but slipped considerably. Like Tejada, I am hoping for each player to rise from the ashes and shoot back up the rankings this next year. Fife struggled more than he should have last year given his stuff and his college success. Renfroe struggled at the plate last year, but is very athletic and should have a big bounceback year in 2011..

For every post in this thread I went no, no, no, don't think so......other than this one. This one made me go, yeah maybe. Gibson, isn't just a guy who can take a walk, but prior to 2010 he also showed good athleticism and instincts. These traits made Gibson a near Top 100 prospect previous to 2010. He was also a potential first round pick after his junior year in HS, before having a sub-par senior season. Gibson maybe one of those guys who just had a tough year in his first year of full season ball. The two young SS's are good picks too but neither of those guys is as advanced as Gibson. So I'm with MN, put down two for Gibson.
