Epstein has been engaged in ongoing discussions with his former top lieutenant, San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer, about a trade that would bring slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. It appears Epstein is making some headway, one baseball source with knowledge of the negotiations said Friday, in tempting Hoyer with a package of top prospects in the Red Sox minor league system. He is a great player but coming off an injury and his impending free agency, I would be comfortable giving Kelly, Lars, and Navarro (and/or Reddick), but that probably won't get it done, they will probably want Bard. I do feel like we would be able to negotiate a fair deal for both AGon and us (money and year wise). For one year only, plenty of teams can afford $5.5 million I would imagine. Although there is a possibility of an extension, there doesn't have to be one.

Also, if you look at the contracts signed thus far (particularly Benoit's), it's probably a better bet to pay for a player in prospects than in cash this offseason. And considering the volatility of relievers, a 1 year contract commitment is a nice luxury.

That way the Sox are certainly paying but not hurting their short-term chances in the process. Not saying they would do it, but if Bell's name is being discussed it could be in this nature imo.

Although it would concern me if Gonzalez is determined to test the free agent market, and not allow us a window to discuss an extension prior to a trade of a good chunk of our upper minors talent

Sure but are you really going to give up substantial prospects for one year of Adrian Gonzalez and draft picks? Gammons, who is the only person who knows what's really going on, tweets that they aren't close to a deal. But if they don't get Gonzo, they will have to play in front of an empty ballpark, and no one will watch the Sox on TV. At least that's what I hear on talk radio.

Kelly, Workman, Pimental: Iglesias OR Kalish (not both) Rizzo.

Not sure gammons is the only one who "knows what going on" guys like Heyman and Rosenthal and many others are very well connected. Gammons says they weren't "close" but were talking.. but it has seemed as this thing has already progressed.

It's possible, but given how bad the bullpen was the Sox can afford to keep Paps on a one year deal, especially if they don't increase AGon's salary for the year he's already under contract (then Paps can leave as a FA and his money goes to a large AGon extension).
