Time to start focusing on the 2011 draft.

Word out there today is the California Golden Bears are dropping baseball after the 2011 season.

That move has been officially announced. Cal is also eliminating men's and women's gymnastics and women's lacrosse teams after this year and will stop fully funding the national-champion men's rugby team. The cuts will save $4 million in 2011-12. The school has fielded a baseball team since 1892. The team has won two national titles -- including at the first College World Series in 1947 -- and in 1957.

I expect a lot more programs to follow. Obviously this will impact on the 2011 draft, as players who would otherwise go to Cal to play ball may go pro, and players at Cal will turn pro.

For New England locals, UConn has two players who are being touted as first round players - Matt Barnes who Keith Law said during the Team USA scouting is second only to Coles in terms of RHP; and George Springer, an OF with an advanced bat who tore up the Cape League and did the job for Team USA, as well. The Huskies may have 2-4 other players who could go in rounds 2-5 as well. An odd but welcome occurrence for a cold weather team.

Tyler Beede is one name I am keeping my on. Might be an interesting bonus baby, close to home but is committed to Vanderbilt.

Is that kid Meyer eligible next year for the draft. He turned down 2million from Sox. Advised by Boras. Does he look like a 1st rounder if so?

I'm assuming this is partially due to the California governmental budget problems. If so, is there concerns that this going to impact more of the state schools in California or is it limited to Cal?

Yes, he's eligible. He'll need to show some sort of command at UK this year, otherwise he's a pure projection pick. If the draft were held tomorrow, I suppose he would be a late 1st/sandwich/early 2nd pick. He's 6'9" and throws 96 with flashes of a plus curve. Some team will pay for that. A nice write-up on one of his '10 starts can be found here.

The former '08 Sox draftee to keep an eye on is 24th rounder Ricky Oropesa. He could very well be a mid-1st rounder this year.

Kids committed to Cal can just de-commit.

I bet that kids currently at Cal will be granted an instant transfer.

I doubt it.

After all, if he saw this coming then he would have committed elsewhere.

And believe me pretty much every single program in the nation would happily pick up a top 100 draft prospect.

With their win today, Detroit officially locked up the first unprotected pick (19 overall) in the 2011 draft.

Boston (currently) owns the 24th pick.

Unofficially, Vmart and Beltre are ranked 4th and 9th respectively in this year's Elias free agent class. As of 9/28, Werth, R. Soriano, and Jeter were ranked higher than Vmart. Next were Lee, Rivera, Crawford, and Pettitte before arriving at Beltre.

10/5 Update: Elias type A/B rankings now done. Ortiz narrowly missed type A status.

After taking out players whose club options will be picked up and the Yankee FAs, the list goes:

1. Werth
2. Soriano
3. V. Martinez
4. C. Lee
5. Crawford
6. Beltre

With the Angels and A's having protected picks, it's not looking like we're getting a 1st rounder if we let Beltre walk.

7. Arizona (for failure to sign 2010 draft pick Barret Loux)
10. San Diego (for failure to sign 2010 draft pick Karsten Whitson)
15. Milwaukee (for failure to sign 2010 draft pick Dylan Covey)
All second round picks signed in 2010, so no compensation there.
The only third rounder not to sign was Ryne Stanek, drafted 99th overall by Seattle. Seattle will get a comp pick between the 3rd and 4th rounds.

Yeah was hoping that Detroit would lose the final day so Detroit got #18 but unfortunately not the case.

Would be nice if they didn't re-up Inge and went after Beltre, but that is unlikely.

There was a report that Colorado will go after VMart. That's the 20th pick. About Beltre there's always the Giants and Padres. Westcoast teams with unprotected picks. Probably not.

I wonder if people think that Sonny Grey will slip. If he does, he could be 2011s Ranaudo. Scouts are already a little sour on him because he's short. But so's this guy and he's okay.
