Sox just put out a release that Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland, his dad and Theo Epstein will hold a press conference at noon to update the media and public on his progress from a cavernous malformation in his brain for which he underwent surgery. It's full of good things: Westmoreland and Colameta were tossing the ball at short distances. “[Ryan] said, ‘Alright, I’m just going to throw it,’ ” Colameta recalled. Dugan looked up to see the ball sailing high and far. The old Ryan Westmoreland was suddenly right there in front of him — the kid who could throw a 93-mph fastball, the athlete who excelled at two sports in high school and had baseball scouts raving about his seemingly inevitable future in the major leagues. “All of a sudden, he was throwing, and he just threw a bomb over Charlene, all the way over the fence, into the woods,” Dugan said. At moments like that, Ryan Westmoreland believes that his dream of playing in the major leagues really will come true. “I can throw again,” Westmoreland said. “It’s not there yet, but I’m starting to really get into the idea that I’m going to play again. Going through rehab is very monotonous. At the same time, if you have a goal — and I have a big-time goal — you don’t let that go. I keep thinking back to it: I’m going to play in Boston one day.” His immediate aim is to be ready for the start of Instructional League in September. “I don’t necessarily want to play, I just want to go, work out, hang out with those guys,” he said.

It's full of good things: And for those of you who (like me) didn't understand exactly what he was going through, and how far he has apparently come, from earlier in the same article: The first time Dugan saw his friend try to throw a ball post-surgery, only a month had passed since the operation, and Westmoreland’s brain couldn’t yet send the right signals to his body. The ball traveled only three feet or so. Pretty inspiring stuff. At the very least, I hope to find out tomorrow that his day-to-day is basically normal, no matter what he decides to do about that silly game with the stick and the round thing. Veteran Member Posts: 4693 06/23/10 8:07 AM Veteran Member	No one can know if Westmoreland is going to make it to Fenway as a player. Including he himself. This is an inspiring story. But what he is trying to do is get himself back into shape to play a sport at the highest levels that demands extreme amounts of a wide variety of physical gifts. From the tenor of the article, I guess there is no real history of anyone recovering from this with baseball as a goal, and anyway, with this condition each such case is probably unique unto itself, so that nothing could be gleaned about Ryan's case even if there were precedent. His recovery cannot plateau anything significantly short of 100%, or it would probably be dangerous, never mind functionally impossible, for him to play baseball at the highest levels. We all certainly wish him the very best -- but he is a long, long, long, long way from even considering playing professional baseball at this point. One thing to keep in mind about rehab/recovery: for many conditions, the larger, easier improvements come at the beginning. Later improvement is commonly tougher, and in smaller increments. It does sound as if his recovery will be sufficient for him to pursue "normal" living of some kind or other, which is fabulous news in and of itself. Play professional/major league baseball? That is a realm so beyond "normal" that his future is unknowable, and the odds are probably stupendous against him. If you think Jon Lester's circumstances were hard, and thus inspiring, you ain't seen nuthin' yet. The type of cancer Jon had was life-threatening, but it sapped only his strength and maybe a little flexibility, not his motor skills or other physical tools. So once he was better, he didn't really have to relearn anything, just get stronger and re-acclimate himself to a game he was still functionally able to play with the same attributes as before. This is an entirely different kettle of fish. Best of luck, Ryan -- however your life turns out.

Ryan Westmoreland appears to one determined SOB, so I wouldn't put anything past him. Based on the articles written about Ryan and the progress that he has made to date it is very encouraging to say the least. I believe that Westy will be back in 2011 fully recovered. Unswevering dedication.

But, considering Westmoreland's combination of spectacular physical gifts and stubborn determination, I would never bet against any goal he set for himself, including a return to competitive baseball next year.
