The Red Sox outrighted right-handed pitcher Fernando Cabrera, outfielder Joey Gathright and infielder Nick Green to Pawtucket.

Does that mean they all cleared waivers and are off the 40-man roster? I'm somewhat surprised that no one picked up Green.

Ramon Hernandez negotiating with Reds; Reds hold $8.5M option for 2010 (unlikely to
exercise)
Ramon isn't my first choice to backup Victor next year. Truth be told I'm hoping the exodus of contracts continues from Cleveland and that it ultimately lands Shoppach back home in Boston. However, if that doesn't go anywhere (Cleveland may be reluctant to go with the two kids next year), pairing Hernandez with fellow countryman Martinez might be the next best thing. Hernandez, who may be reluctant to come to Boston if he wouldn't be the clear-cut starting catcher, saw his CS% go back up to previous levels in 2009 (25%) and may benefit from the reduced role that would await him in Boston. I really believe Varitek's inability to control the running game removes him from consideration for the backup spot. He holds an option but there are ways for a team to, well, "make it known they'd like to move in a different direction". Hernandez isn't perfect, by any stretch; he struggled his last two years in Baltimore and was hurt part of last year in Cincy. In a market where not a lot of talent appears to be available, he's another name to consider if something doesn't get done with the Reds.

I was trying to think of some of the teams reportedly looking to shed salary - Cinn, Cleve, Tam, Tex, Marls, and perhaps Tor, Hou, and even Minn as they gear
up to sign Mauer - and I wondered if, because of the Mauer situation and the injury, could Morneau be had. Certainly not cheaply, but cheaper than, say, Adrian
Gonzalez. Has this come up yet (and mentioned so far back on this thread that I was still in my nonage and had yet learned of this thing you call base ball)?
If so, apologies, but the Twins do owe Mr. Morneau 4 more years at $14 mil per. Meanwhile we have a very nice and Twin-like Casey Kotchman over here we're
not using, and perhaps a pitcher (Bard? Pimental?) and another rising star (Kalish, Reddick, or Navarro) who would fit your system nicely. If he could be had
for that (and save the Twins plenty toward the Mauer project) it wouldn't be a good a Gonzalez but it'd be close, and for fewer prospects.

See what I mean, Guidas? Totally. But I also know that ownership has a long record of "revenue certainty," and new park revenue generation aside, I don't think you'll see all the new $$$ go on the field. Consider: - Minn's payroll has averaged about $61 mil (Cots http://mlbcontracts.blogs...minnesota-twins_17.html) since 2003, well before the economic decline. -Even if their projected 30% increase in "revenue" (which I think is incredibly rosy for that market after the first year novelty wears off) becomes a 20% increase in average payroll, that's approx $12 mil more a year. - Even with a hometown discount, looking at the Teixera and ARod deals, given his age, position and prowess, Mauer should cost them $23-25 mil a year to keep - that comprises 31.5-34% of total budget. You add in $14 million a year to that (Morneau) and you are at excess of 50% of payroll for two players. That is unsustainable for any team. So, OK, maybe the players I am proposing are waaaay off, and they would want a significantly more. But then again, I looked at what they got for Santana who was a salary dump as well, and I wasn't too impressed with Mr. Smith's eye for talent. But I will atone - let's just say Kotchman, because he fills an immediate need at first and is a "Twins" player (i.e. average bat, plus defense) and add in 3 blue chip prospects, cause that's all they took for Santana (if that). Anyway, the method to my madness explained. I didn't mean to propose a total talk radio trade here. I just think if they do extend - or decide the MUST extend Mauer - Morneau, within their traditional salary structure, even with projected increases, becomes too pricey for them. |

I think there is certainly a chance that Morneau becomes available, for the reasons you cite Guidas, although pretty doubtful right now. The apples-and-oranges
factor when comparing his trade value and Santana's is that Morneau is under a favorable contract - the winner of the Santana sweepstakes had to pony up an
exorbitant contract on top of the talent swap. I wouldn't be surprised though if they start talking to Mauer about an extension and get to some hard
numbers, then decide Morneau is the face of the franchise and deal Mauer for a king's ransom.

If the Sox don't make the huge splash that i think we all want to see happen, i think Mark DeRosa could be an interesting player. Although he doesnt fit
the Theo mold offensively as he is not a high OPS players, he has manged to put up some decent numbers.I don't even pretend to begin to understand UZR and
all that but he doesnt appear to be a bad defensive player, but i could be wrong on that, as again i know errors aren't a great determining factor. But his
versatility and character seem to fit this team perfectly. A player that can start at 3rd, spell Pedey at 2nd, KY at 1st, and both the corner outfield spots,
maybe not RF @ Fenway, but on the road certainly. Again this isnt my ideal offseason piece, as i fall in the group of people who think a major acquisition is
needed. But if things were to fall through, and Derosa finds himself still a FA late in the offseason and a deal can be made for short money and years, that it
could be one of those savvy Theo moves IMO.
And i found this to be pretty funny too, SI.com Truth and Rumors section today saying that the Yankees would not be in on any of the big name free agents this offseason even though the big names fill needs. Also goes on to say that that based on conversations with several Yankees officials that philosophically and finacially motivated reasons will be why they are not "big game hunters" this offseason. I had a good laugh at that as i don't think those two words have ever been associated with the Styeinbrenner's or Cashman. J.J. Hardy, rumored to be a possible Sox SS candidate, is off the market. Good move by the Brewers. They already have the SS position filled by Escobar,
making Hardy expendable. And, they add a young, fast CF with some upside. They save money, too, by not re-signing Cameron.

Josh Beckett told WEEI.com that he wants to come to Boston in the next couple of weeks to get a reading on the club's feelings about an extension when his contract expires after next season. But Beckett clearly is looking at the money the Yankees paid CC Sabathia ($161 million over seven years) and thinking he, too, can make between $15 million and $20 million. That will be a very tough call for the Red Sox, not much different from the call the Angels were required to make on John Lackey. As much as anyone who knows Beckett believes in him and his ability to rise to any occasion, there are some facts to consider: Is it possible that if the Red Sox find they and Beckett's agent, Michael Moye, are speaking two different languages they would consider trading Beckett? Sure, but it is highly unlikely. The argument for it is that they would move on with Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz at the top of the rotation and prospect Casey Kelly a year from arrival, but what does that do for 2010, even if they were to sign a Ben Sheets or acquire a Javier Vazquez contract? |

GM Meetings are Monday. If you're Theo and you find out Toronto is getting ready to deal Roy Halladay, and you find out that the Yankees are the front
runner to trade for him and sign him to a 4 year extension, do you do all you can to block the deal, even if it's going to cost you more than you wanted to
give in the way of MLB talent (Buchholz, Bard), prospects (Kelly, Westmoreland, plus pick one), years (to 2015 intstead of 2014) and dollars, or do you let
them get him and risk them having a rotation of Sabathia, Halladay, Burnett and whomever for the next 4 years? Or do you blow up the farm getting him (and
leaving the Yankees with their prospects) and pray his shoulder and relative results stay together until 2015 because you're paying him $20 mil a year til
then?

If I am looking to trade Beckett my very first phone call is to Brian Sabean. The Giants are very close and regardless of trend Beckett brings a playoff
demeanor that that team will need if/when they make a run. Add a stacked minor league system and a GM prone to brainfart, and it could get pretty interesting.

The Halladay ship has sailed, as far as giving up a huge haul for him.
Unless it's a Felix Hernandez, I would prefer the Sox main goal be to improve the offense and take some pressure off the staff they already control. It says a lot when many Sox fans are excited about the thought of a Hermida/Badelli platoon in LF. |

Beckett's value will depend greatly on who else is available to the Red Sox, and that includes how good Buchholz is. Unless Halladay and Lee are signed to
long term deals, it's going to be easier for the Sox to go into next winter with Beckett as a FA, so they can comparison shop, and also have had another
year of Buch evals at the MLB level. They need to get to 95 wins, so they'll overspend if there aren't other options, but it's going to be a big
risk if they sign Beckett now, so they'd rather wait to see their other options... I would think.
