Sox will get the draft picks only if Bay is signed by a team that has the draft pick in the bottom half of the first round. If he is signed by Mets or any one
in the upper half then good bye to that draft pick.

Or 1 first, 2 supplementals, and a 2nd, depending on where Bay goes.

I love this deal. Cash out, acquire top pitcher, keep prospects.
That's how a big market team should play. |

I equate this to the Celtics signing Rasheed Wallace. I don't like him personally, but I appreciate his impact as a player and I'll root for him as a
Red Sox.

I opened the other thread for a reason. I'll delete future comments on Buchholz/Gonzalez in inappropriate threads.

But really, I was just thinking about the fact that they are both polecats in general. While one would never imply that any professional athlete is not on some level ego-driven, I think that is a secondary factor in any possible tension here. Rational egotists can get along pretty well. But, like I said, they could end up kissing cousins which would be excellent. It was just an angle I thought worth consideration. FTHW, I tend to agree with you. I love Beckett (to the point that it was very close to being my son's name) but some of the trendlines are already a little cloudy. It would have to be the right deal for me to not have reservations.

McAdam brought up a good point on FSNNewEngland. That Clay is there if they need to make a deal at the trade deadline this season. You can't count on Wake
being healthy all year either. Clay is a big chip and he is only getting better. Lackey is insurance in case Beckett leaves and just think what if they make
Josh available at the trade deadline instead? If they know they can't sign him then we can choose the other teams best talent to get back! Possibly flip
that for Miggie or AGon! The last sentence is my point.
Thank you Theo for thinking outside the box on this one. C-ya later Jay Bay tell me how it is to hit at Citi Field. Try playing some D there. |

Matthew Carruth hates the deal. He makes
interesting points, but overall I don't see the regression he sees. His contact % is the same as always and his recent rate stats (K, BB, HR/9) are in
line with his career or better. He was at his best in '05/'06 but he's still a strong #2 type starter. Assuming his medicals check out,
there's little reason to believe he won't go back to being a 200 inning guy. If there's any concern, then they definitely should pass on giving
him a 5 year contract. I think Lackey will start out at about a 4.5 WAR player and hold steady rather than start as a 3 WAR player and regress.

If it came down to giving Bay say 5/75 or giving Lackey 5/85 I'll spend the extra 10 million on the pitching rotation. I don't think Bay could get that
type of deal from the Sox but probably what he's looking for (the 5th year). I've never been a big Lackey fan but he's going to be their 3rd
starter, and he will be awesome in that role. I really hope they keep Buchholz, a fifth starter is a must in the regular season, the Sox should be in just
about every game this year with this kind of rotation. I think Terry has to sack up and actually try to win more games earlier in the year. Sox may not have
the luxury to think marathon early on in the year. I don't really like Wake as a long man but he might have to suck it up and eat some innings. Dice-K and
Buchholz back to back is a little scary when you realize that the pen is going to go 6-8 innings for a lot of two day stretches throughout the year. Theo needs
to make sure there's enough depth in the pen.

Agreed AMarsh. There is the health concern of course, but Lackey's performance really does not show a regression, and he flat out dominated the last two
months of 2009. It is also surprising that Carruth did not factor into the cost the fact that the Red Sox gave up zero talent, and actually improved their
draft package, by signing him.

They didn't improve their draft package by signing him. By signing him, they lose a 2nd round pick (or 1st, depending on how you look at it). By letting
Bay walk they improve their draft package, but Bay and Lackey weren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Torii, fan of John Lackey, not happy today:
According to multiple reports, Lackey was in Boston to undergo a physical today, the final step in an agreement with the Red Sox on a five-year deal for about $85 million. The team had not completed its evaluation of Lackey as of Monday evening.LA Times
