He seemed very upset about my opinions and was almost hostile in his responses. He must have been upset about something else, I don't know, it was strange. It certainly would provide some protection in the event that the Red Sox can't extend Beckett beyond the 2010 season. Poorest spending of $3 million that I have ever seen.-fcastig 0220

No. His value to the club? If anything shouldn't it make his relatively low salary more valuable considering they'll now have Lackey's potentially large contract and maybe Beckett's too?

Assuming for a second it does I think it would signify an AGon/MCab trade with Lowell either being moved or seeing time as a bench/DH/3B platoon guy. Then maybe the Sox fill LF with a Cameron-type and you avoid dealing with Boras who gets to feel what its like to not have the Sox or Yanks in on his client (payback for Teixera?).

That's an interesting proposition...

He doesn't have Burnett's sexy fastball but he's undoubtedly the better pitcher of the two. Statisically speaking, he's actually Beckett's equal. aminahyaquin: Alou is a 37 year old 7 time MVP with a .347 lifetime batting average and a world of hustle. he can golden glove field in his sleep. tGG: Alou is actually 42, has never won an MVP, has a .303 lifetime batting average, and is mediocre at best in the field. joshv02: But, other than that, you're wrong.

The deal is expected to be similar to the five-year, $82.5 million contract that the Yankees awarded free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett last winter. The Red Sox generally do not like to award five-year contracts, which is one of the sticking points in their negotiations with free-agent left fielder Jason Bay. It is not known whether they would guarantee Lackey five years, or award him a three- or four-year deal with options. Some Halladay news ... The Angels and Phillies are the front-runners in trade discussions for Blue Jays right-hander Roy Halladay, according to major-league sources. Another possibility for the Angels would be a trade for Braves right-hander Derek Lowe. .... and the cherry on top. The Red Sox, in addition to Lackey, are trying to sign right-hander Josh Beckett to a contract extension. Beckett, 29, is entering the final year of his contract. Veteran Member Posts: 243 12/14/09 1:59 PM	I am so excited about this deal, a front four of Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Jon Lester, and a healhty Dice-K is pretty good. Lets pray they can all stay healthy. Average age of those four guys is 28. I feel like we can now package Bowden and Buch in a deal for a bat on the trade market like Adrian Gonzalez or Miguel Cabrera. Also just a thought, I think that Buch and Bowden is a good starting point for Hanley negotiations. Young pitching is what the Marlins always go for. Still a long shot though, plus that would totally void the Scutaro signing. If the reports about Lackey are true, I am really pumped.

Rookie Posts: 50 12/14/09 2:00 PM	Yep, looks like we are spending our Holliday money on a Lackey. Beckett-Lester-Lackey-DiceK-Wakefield/Buchholz. And, it is good news to see that Beckett is going to get a new deal soon. I had the Sox spending $33 million/season on contracts this off-season. Lackey (if the estimate is to Burnett, which it likely is) is $16.5 million and Scutaro is $5.5 million which leaves $11 million/season available for its budget before arbitration. And if Matsuzaka can get back on track then then the foursome will be real good. Now they may move Buchholz in the right deal for Gonzalez or Cabrera. Now I know SD has said they weren't moving him, but they won't be able to sign him to an extension and they will get the most value now and from Boston
