As you might know, a team cannot receive compensaton for a Type A or Type B fee agent unless it offers that free agent arbitration and the player declines. It will be interesting to see what players are offered arbitration this year, particualrly those players that the Red Sox have expressed interested in. Here is the list of the pending Type A and B free agents for this off-season. We'll use this thread to track which players are offered arbitration over the next few days. Veteran Member Posts: 337 11/28/09 2:40 PM	I think there are going to be more players accepting arbitration this year than even the clubs realize. The Alex Gonzalez signing shows that this is going to be an unusual market because the agents and players are going to be conservative. In pervious years, Gonzalez might have waited hoping for a multi-year deal but knowing he'd at least get $2-$3M no matter what happened. This year, players like Gonzalez risk having very small deals or no major league deal at all if they wait.

Sure you can come up with a reason to justify it, but in reality arbitration is a one year deal. If Toronto got stuck with Scutaro for 1 year then they would deal with it most likely by trading him at some point. This is also Scutaro's best (last?) chance at a multi year deal. He's the most "desired" short stop on the market and as long as he piggy backs on another Type A guy or goes to a team who's going to lose another Type A then he'll get his contract. A little supressed perhaps, but he'll get his money. If Toronto doesn't offer arbitration then they are foolish and I'll be happy for the Sox to give him a 2 year deal.

Veteran Member Posts: 391 12/01/09 12:42 PM	i'm not talking myself into what i want to happen. the boston red sox would be better served with a different player at SS than marco scutaro. as recently as last year, the new york yankees surprised everyone by not offering bobby abreu arbitration, even though they are the richest team in the universe. toronto doesn't seem like a team that can risk arbitration with a backup infielder coming off a career year.

It's really not all that much of a risk. First of all, Scutaro would need to accept arbitration, and why would he? He thinks he can get more money on the open market, he knows Toronto doesn't want him, and he knows he could be traded. And even if he accepted arbitration, Toronto is only stuck with a one-year contract. And he could still be traded.

He thinks he can get more money on the open market, he knows Toronto doesn't want him, and he knows he could be traded. And even if he accepted arbitration, Toronto is only stuck with a one-year contract. And he could still be traded. It's even less of a risk than that. Players signed through the arbitration process do not receive guaranteed contracts (the contracts are not guaranteed until the following season begins). Toronto could just cut Scutaro in spring training and all they would owe is 30 or 45 days of termination pay (depending on when he was cut). That's what happened with Tony Graffanino in 2006. Rob Neyer (12:50 PM) Sure, I think they have to offer him arbitration. If he accepts, they can always trade him to one of the teams that needs a shortstop.

So the immediate comparison in the middle IF would seem to be Pedroia at SS and Hudson/Polanco at 2B with no loss of draft picks, vs Pedroia at 2B, Scutaro at SS and a lost high pick. Makes the Scutaro option look even worse. Problem is, with Polanco and Hudson truly free, the market for them might develop quickly. If the Sox are serious about exploring all options at SS before moving Pedroia, these guys might be gobbled up before the Sox commit themselves to go that route. But I don't see why Lowrie should be stuck at AAA, rather than being a utility infielder. And ASF makes a good point about the time sensitive nature of the Pedroia/SS solution.
