According to Foxsports.com, the Jays signed Alex Gonzalez to a one-year deal. Terms of the deal were not released, but the signing of the 32-year old Gonzalez likely spells the end of Marco Scutaro's time in Toronto. Gonzalez, who split time last season with the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox, hit .238 with eight home runs in 112 games played. Gonzalez, who missed the entire 2008 season recovering from a knee injury, hit .272 with 16 home runs in 2007. Rosenthal Alex Gonzalez won't be BOS shortstop in 2010. What are the odds they dont offer him arb? I really dont want to go down this road, rather have a defensive no hit SS and hope Lowrie can get healthy. I would be very hesitant to sign an aging Scutaro coming off a career year.

Veteran Member Posts: 256 11/26/09 11:27 AM Veteran Member	I suggested Nick Punto in another thread. He's not an option for 162 games, but he would add depth and is redundant in Minnesota with J.J. Hardy in the fold. I guess I could warm up to Marco Scutaro for something like 2 years/$10 million. He's a solid defender, and has always been able to take a walk. The Sox could do a lot worse from their #9 hitter.

He's coming off a career year, so this is probably his last chance to get a long-term contract. It would be foolish of him to accept.

Maybe it is Scutaro, although I'm with the contingent not terribly excited by that. I am a bit mystified that the Sox just didn't sign Gonzalez and focus their resources on other needs.

Rather than wait for the situation with Boston to resolve itself, Gonzalez opted to sign with the Bluejays for approximately $2.75 million. link

Scutaro would be a superior upgrade to Lugo at the SS position imo

The Red Sox made the 2009 playoffs partially as a result of the strong contributions, both offensively and defensively, by Gonzalez. Punto, Green, Hulett, et al might be nice bench players, but none of them are going to help the Red Sox make the 2010 playoffs if they are starters for more than 15-20 games. I just read that the sox wouldn't even give $3 million. I base that it was a mistake because it will cost more for the alternative, and if it doesn't, it will be a step back. A $3M difference wouldn't be something that kept the sox from making a bigger move. And now they are probably going to have to spend at least $10M.

Dude, Nick Punto is a better player than Gonzalez. Punto: 18.1 UZR/150 in 1775.0 career innings at shortstop, .322 career OBP. Alex Gonzalez: 6.9 UZR/150 in 10320.0 career innings at SS, .294 career OBP Punto can also pick it at second or third, and would make a nifty utility infielder if Lowrie ends up healthy and productive. My point isn't that Punto is some kind of great player, my point is that replacing Gonzalez is not a big deal. Any glove will do. I'd say there is at least a reasonable chance the Jays don't offer him arbitration now that they have Gonzalez. What if he gets the sense teams are going to shy away because of the combination of his age and draft pick compensation? He can accept arb and split time at SS, which would be an absolute nightmare for them from a payroll standpoint.

Can a team not looking to add payroll take the chance of other teams losing interest bc of the picks? He would probably get around 6-9 million.
