Going into September, Boston had seven players with team options for 2010: Josh Beckett: Team option automatically vested on September 7. Alex Gonzalez: The Sox declined his option yesterday. According to this report by Alex Speier of WEEI.com, A-Gon has a mutual option and now has two days to decide if he wants to come back on a $6-million annual salary for 2010. Nobody else in the media seems to be talking about this as a possibility. Interesting. The two sides could be negotiating a restructured deal right now. Victor Martinez - $7-million team option. No brainer. Takashi Saito - Option declined, outrighted on October 19. Jason Varitek - $5-million club option likely to be declined. Varitek then would have five days to exercise $3-million player option Billy Wagner - option declined per agreement. Wagner filed for free agency on Thursday. Tim Wakefield - $4-million team option. Of course that gives another team a shot at picking him up as a FA. But is this realistic? The Sox, if satisfied that he would return to his pre-injury status, could then negotiate a new one year contract, one perhaps built around incentives.

This was my original question before re-reading Speier's explanation again: The club has until five days after the World Series to make a decision about whether to exercise its $6 million option for next year. If it declines the option, it must pay a $500,000 buyout. Since it is a mutual option, if the Sox do pick up the option, Gonzalez would then have two days to decide whether to accept or decline the chance to return to Boston on that one-year, $6 million deal. If he declines the option, he also voids the buyout. The buyout becomes void if the Sox had picked up the option and, in that two day window, Gonzo decided to decline. Otherwise, if both he and the Sox decline, he's still eligible for the $500K buyout.

According to a baseball source, the Red Sox and Wakefield are discussing the two-year arrangement because the club had some concerns about exercising the regenerating, $4 million option on the player's contract in the wake of surgery to remove disc fragments from the player's back.

Since they did not exercise their option, they must pay the $500,000 buyout, but Gonzalez has no other option. So there really is no difference between this and what has generally been reported in the media, although there would have been a technical difference if the Sox had exercised their option - Gonzalez would have had the option to accept it, or not.

But veteran Jason Varitek, who has caught more games than any player in Red Sox history, remains in limbo. Boston declined the $5 million club option it held for Varitek, but the veteran has until Saturday to notify the team if he will exercise his $3 million player option. If Varitek declines his option, he will be a free agent for the second consecutive offseason. Facing a Monday deadline to pick up Wakefield's $4 million club option, the Red Sox instead agreed to a two-year pact with the veteran right-hander. While the Red Sox, as is their club policy, did not reveal terms of the deal, WEEI.com reported that it was worth a guaranteed $7 million.
