There are ways to start a season. Beating Cleveland on the road is at or near the top of that list.

I'd like to see how Cleveland and Orlando pan out before I declare "championship or bust" here.
My thoughts: -Good win vs. a good team, but it still counts as 1. Lets not get carried away. -The offense looked almost as stagnant as it did towards the end of last year. -KG was moving better and made quite a few good plays, his lateral movement is looking good right now. -I can't wait until everyone start clamoring about Wallace jacking up threes. -Daniels is going to be the most important part of this team, if he plays well, the second unit is gonna be scoring points, not letting up points, and breaking games wide open. -We may be getting ready to witness one of the best defensive teams ever. -Nice to see Pierce still hitting the big shots.

Take off your Celtics glasses for a change and look at it objectively.
KG, Ray, and Paul are a year older. The bench is much better, and our achillies heal last year (health, wear and tear) is still going to be a wild card throughout the season. There are four, maybe five teams who are in line to have a shot at going for the title (Lakers/Spurs, Celtics/Cavaliers/Magic). To say the Celtics are the team to beat at this stage of the season is ridiculous. The best team in the NBA, on paper, is the Celtics. But a lot of things happen throughout the course of the season, and declaring "championship or bust" after one game is absurd. It's not really fair to make judgments on Orlando and Cleveland based off of what you feel they'll do on paper, and one game (respectively). The Celtics are going to be a great team this year, but lets not overreact to one game and see how things work out to start the season between the contenders. |

If KG is healthy the whole year I don't know how they are not the favorites. Shaq will be more of a drag than a huge upgrade. Plus the Celtics added Sheed
which offsets any edge on the offensive end with his defense on head to head match-up. Unless LeBron turns into vintage Mike I don't see them beating the
C's. Orlando added Vince but is he really going to threaten the C's from there next championship.

The Cavs had two major problems that did them in last season: no true PG who could create for his teammates down the stretch, and a lack of athleticism in the
frontcourt. While Shaq certainly gives them more of an inside presence, the team still hasn't addressed either of those issues. The Magic are an exciting
team...especially with Jameer back...but in a 7-game series a (*key word alert*) healthy Celtics team should certainly beat them.
On paper, I agree with ASAL in that the Celtics are the best team in the East by a pretty wide margin. I'd also give the team the edge over the Lakers because of its huge advantage defensively and at the PG position, but LA is certainly on the same level as the Celtics in terms of pure talent. Cleveland, San Antonio, and Orlando fall below those teams in any order, but there's a pretty noticeable drop off. Of course, a lot can happen over the course of an 82-game season in terms of injuries and other factors, which is why they play the games (stupid cliche, I know, but it's fitting).
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

I have no problem saying the Celtics are the best team in the East. All I'm trying to say here is you can't really declare it based off of raw talent
and how they look on paper. Before declaring this season anything you need to figure out what the Celtics identity will be, along with the Cavs and Magic. Are
the Celtics one of the frontrunners for the NBA title? You bet your ass they are one of four or five teams with legitimate aspirations. But can you really get
a reading of who the best team is going to be based off of one game? It's easy to sit there and say "Vince Carter is a cancer and makes the Magic
worse", but do you really know that? On paper, sure, but how do you know the guy hasn't changed for the better? Do you even realize that the Magic
bolstered their bench too? In getting Brandon Bass and Ryan Anderson it lets Lewis move to his more natural '3' position and he won't be having to
guard bigger guys on a night in night out basis.
The fact is, is that the Magic are the deepest team of all of the contenders. They can play 1-11, whereas the Celtics and Cavs will usually end up playing their 1-9. As for the issue of the Cavs needing a playmaking PG, I agree, they still kind of do, but LeBron pretty much gives them that service, especially at the end of games when he's having guys double and triple off him when he drives to the basket. Again, I have no problem with saying the Celtics are the best team in the league. None at all. But you can't sit there and say it like it is such a foregone conclusion, because (1) its day 2 of the entire season, and (2) the Magic haven't even played a game yet (not minding their meaningless 8-0 preseason with a 17.8 average margin). |

And in the playoffs, how often does a team's 9-11 see consistent playing time (let alone make any significant contributions)? Yes, but when the Cavs made the NBA championship in 2006, the team's biggest issue is that it had no one besides LeBron who could make any sort of play down the stretch of close games. Teams can afford to double and triple team LeBron at the end of games because there's essentially no one else on the team who can make them pay. And while Mo Williams is a good scorer who can carry an offense in short stretches, he's not a guy who can take over down the stretch and win a game for a team. Therefore, pretty much all the responsibility lies on LeBron to create--whether for himself or teammates--and as good as he is, that's very rarely a recipe for sustained success (particularly in the playoffs). Your entire post was reasonable (at least as reasonable as something can be without completely agreeing with me  ) except for this. Preseason games mean
shit.

Which was why I called the preseason games "meaningless". I just thought it was interesting food for thought.
Edit: Also I feel that you usually don't see a teams 9-11 guys contributing because in most cases they just aren't that good. But this year the Magic have legitimate players 1-11 that will contribute not only scoring and defense, but keeping the starters well rested. Another Edit: The Magic just put up 70 in the first half, for what it's worth.

No one here has argued that they aren't good..they're just not as good as a healthy Celtics team. It doesn't mean they can't win against the Celts, even in a 7-game series, but there really isn't a question as to who the better team is gonna be.

Rondo and (to a lesser extent) Perkins are two really good players to build the future around. Point guard and center are the two most important positions,
respectively, on a basketball court, so it's really nice to see that the Celtics are solid (Perk) to really, really good (Rondo) at both spots for the
foreseeable future.
