I have to believe that the starters, except possibly for Dice-K, are 5 innings and out, and the call-ups will get their share of the remaining innings, with the regular relievers getting only an inning or two apiece. R2 and MDC might get a couple of innings as the Sox try to figure out who makes the playoff roster. That leaves about 6 innings for Jones/Carrasco/Richardson/Bowden.

The starters will probably play at least two games apiece. The guys I hope get a couple days' rest are Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Bay. And I'd give VMart a couple days off as well. Youk/Drew/Lowell/Varitek have gotten enough rest, and Ortiz probably ought to keep swinging as DH.

The Sox have a recent history of turning performance on and off, and we'd better hope they find a way to remain true to themselves and turn the switch back on a week from now. Because as the old joke goes, there's nothing like a playoff team, and at this point the Sox are nothing like a playoff team.

You know the funny thing? I looked briefly at the starters for the series, but I can't say that I was paying attention to Cleveland's starters, Carrasco in particular. Yet I believe what happened is that I transferred his name incorrectly in my mind to to the list of callups for the Sox pen. Evidence that the subconscious mind is much stronger than we realize?
