He also has complained about the clubhouse being too crowded. So if that pattern continues then the number will not be very high. Pitching will be a priority and Bowden and Dice-K, along with one or two of the relievers seem to be pretty good bets. Reddick and Anderson also seem likely because of their defensive skills. If Lowrie comes back then I suspect no other infielder will come up. Francona likes Bailey so he probably will get the call, but I would rather see Bates because he has more of a future. After Kotteras, Wagner would be the logical choice for another catcher, also because of his future possibilities. All those are probably as much as Francona wants, maybe more than he wants.

There's no reason for them to call someone up to make them eligible. As for the infield slot, it depends if Lowrie is healthy. If he is, you're set. If he isn't send him to the 60-day and add Woodward or Velazquez.

The Sox and Mets are apparently looking for creative ways to send Carter to New York for September 1, which would clear another space on Boston's roster and allow Carter to get some big league service time for the injury-depleted Mets this season.

Second, they would have to pay him a major league salary during tha time, and he likely wouldn't play. Third, the Mets wouldn't want to risk the chance he gets injured on the Red Sox dime. Fourth, the Mets don't want him racking up service time towards arbitration and free agency on the Red Sox dime. I don't see it happening.

If he's good enough to actually make some money in arbitration, then one month more of service time isn't going to make him eligible as a "super-two". I'm not sure about this, but I don't think that an MLB callup effects Carter's salary. By virtue of being on the major league 40 man roster he receives a major league salary and benefits. I'm also pretty sure that a side-deal where he is released by the Red Sox to sign with the Mets would be quashed by MLB or at least it should be. Its a clear subversion of the rules and likely the CBA. Plus if MLB allowed such a thing there could be huge problems. There's nothing to stop Carter from breaking the side deal and signing with any club he wants. If that happens then you have a mess with the Mets and Sox having to negotiate another player and going to arbitration or court if they can't agree.

He is the only guy in the upper minors really raking right now, and there is something to be said about riding a hot bat. Nava has a good approach, I'd love to see how it works the majors now. We shouldn't be concerned about messing up his development as he seems to have proven himself rather resilient, and already is already on an unconventional path.
