Ian, Aaron, Chirs H., and Jonathan also contributed to the Q&A. http://news.soxprospects.com/2009/08/q-with-jason-mcleod.html Jason McLeod: Ascertaining the makeup of a player is one of the hardest things - if not the hardest thing - that we do as scouts. As much as it hurts to miss on a player's on-field ability, it hurts even more when you whiff on the makeup. We place a huge amount of responsibility on our area scouts to tell us who the "person" is that we are potentially drafting and whether his makeup will help or hinder him in his development.

Veteran Member Posts: 257 08/27/09 9:28 AM	Great interview. I enjoy the interviews with the prospects, but these interviews with Red Sox baseball operations members are very informative. As fans, we can see the results of the operations group through the development of prospects with them breaking into the majors or being used to acquire talent, but I really appreciate the extra effort to find out how the brain of the organization works. Thank you. One question, are the interviews done through e-mail, phone, or one-on-one?

Jason made a very interesting point when he said that Craig Shipley will never be fighting with him over who they each can sign. That sounds like they both appear to have very high budgets, so long as they use them predently and only on players who sign at a reasonable cost.

Not sure if he'd answer it (or if you'd want to ask), but I wonder what comments Jason might have on the site rankings. I'm not talking about asking him to critique the rankings or ask for his own rankings (which I'm sure he wouldn't do), but I'm just wondering what player or players NOT in our top twenty, let's say, whom he thinks especially talented and worth looking at going forward. Obviously the site ranks the top 60 for a reason and I'd be surprised if that top-sixty list doesn't include most if not all of the guys Jason would see as potentially "special," but he might have one or two guys not in our top twenty he thinks may surprise us all. Just a thought.

I have had the chance to speak with him numerous times at Cape League games over the years and he is a real asset for the Red Sox organization.

If a player is in the northeast, we usually do them in person. If they're in the south, it's probably e-mail. As for the rankings thing, I agree it would be interesting to pick his brain (I'd say moreso Mike Hazen's, since he's the one still evaluating these guys once they're in the system, much moreso than McLeod) about his thoughts on them, but I guarantee they'd never answer questions like that in an interview. We also don't want this site to be all about the rankings, so we probably wouldn't bother asking for those two reasons. But like I said, I agree it would be interesting to ask about off the record.

Posts: 165 08/27/09 2:25 PM Matt Staff Writer SoxProspects.com	Great interview, I really enjoyed it. On the question of interview being via email vs. phone or in person. I would suggest citing that they were done by email in the future in the opening because I've read a few (for instance TGG's w/ Younginer) where things they say sound really awkward or formal. It gives me a different impression of the interviewee when I'm trying to get a feel for what type of person he is. Just my personal suggestion.

I think that's a reflection of the sophisticated questions that were asked, and that's impressive. McLeod's not, after all, about to tell us how he'd like the draft tailored to meet the team's needs, is he? But it's exactly the sort of question that should be asked. These interviews show an increasing level of professionalism. They're really excellent and chock full of information. The synopsis he gave on the power hitting potential of this years picks, details about Hassan and Younginer, and more were all elicited by the intelligent questions that were asked. Top shelf stuff. I heard the Red Sox no only pay a lot to sign draft picks but the whole system is the best but they spend top dollar. They have a lot of scouts and crosscheckers. More than your average team. Another thing Francona said. The Red sox would send out scouts for the next team the Sox play. Lets say its the Blue Jays. So back in the day They would submit there reports and go on there way. But Francona said why don't they stay and just go over what they scouted with our team . So they ended up staying thru the series i believe. Great idea. You got to love a team that gives a top job to Bill James and has George Mitchell on there board.
