I just thought it was weird that Tito kept putting him at the top of the lineup, although with Drew anti-leadoff, I guess they didn't have too many other
options. He'll be back up in a couple weeks when Pawtucket's season ends. I would think with Kottaras and Baldelli both magically being healed on
September 1, they can afford to let some of the younger guys continue getting regular ABs in AAA until the regular season ends.

No coincidence that Reddick was kept in Boston until now. If he's called up before 9/2, he won't burn an option this year.
This move has apparently been in the works for a bit - Anderson didn't play yesterday and didn't start on Thursday, although he was a late-game replacement. |

trouble you to explain how this rule works? Thanks.

CBA82 wrote:Not to speak for AB, but there's some excellent information in the wiki here, not least the Player Options page, where you'll find that "Option years are not used up if the player is optioned for less than twenty total days in a given season." He wasn't on the 40-man until he was first called up 7/31, so the only part of this year he'll be "optioned" will be 8/5 and from 8/15 until he gets the (expected) call after rosters expand. Hence they should be able to keep him under 20 days. |

And Brian Anderson with his first K in a Red Sox uniform. (if I only knew how to mirror that K, because he went down looking)

Reddick undoubtedly left a great impression with the decision makers. During his short stay he definitely didn't look over-matched and had several fly outs
that will be HRs and 2B with the physical maturity that is going to happen naturally over the next 3 years or so. Great job Josh, looking forward to your
return.

At the same time, he definitely needs some work on his approach. I could see him having a difficult time adjusting to Triple-A, not unlike Bell and Bates have
had so far, and how Wagner did before he came around some. I almost want to see him fail during his time in Pawtucket before his call-up to perhaps hammer some
lessons home.
Personally, I'm not ready to hand him a starting job next year, and would like to see him get some time in AAA. I'm sure the Red Sox feel the same way, as I believe they would have sent him down earlier otherwise (thus guaranteeing that he burn his option this year). |

Loved Reddick, but I get the feeling that this was a showcase and he will be offered for somebody this winter. (Felix, Hanley?)

I agree that this offseason is likely to a busy one but with Bay on his last year and the Sox unlikely to offer him the years he'll want and with Drew
having only one more year, I think it's unlikely that the Sox would add a near ready outfielder. They'll deal from strength, pitching.
Agreed that Reddick is still a work in progress but his aggressive approach doesn't bother me that much because of his ability to drive pitcher's pitches, he's not swinging at bad pitches out of the strike zone, just needs a little more selectivity when the count is low. A few times in the field, he looked tentative but that will go away with experience. |

This is year 3 of 5 for Drew, so he has 2 years left. I don't see the option years being that big of a deal for the Sox, I think it also has to do with
bringing in a RHH OF to platoon vs lefties with Drew. I think they went Reddick because they thought they might need more of an everyday guy than a platoon guy
(which is why they had to phantom DL Baldelli).

Arquimedez Bozo wrote: I agree completely with you that this was no coincidence as we know how the Sox are obsessed with roster flexibility (rightly so). It should be noted that if Reddick burns an option in 2012, something has probably gone horribly wrong with him, as I think he has shown he can be a solid contributor in the majors within 1-1.5 years. Drew's contract is up after 2011, and I would assume Reddick fills that role for 2012 if not before then. A lot can happen, but hopefully that 3rd option is irrelevant. |

However, do the Red Sox make this move at the peril of losing one or more games while Drew is on the shelf until at least Wednesday with a groin pull? Anderson
has no stick and his defense looked a little suspect last night. Reddick is a good defensive player, with strong arm, who is a much better hitter than
Anderson. In Reddick's short stay with the Red Sox, he had one HR and two other near HR which were either just foul (against Yankees) or caught at the top
of the wall (against Rangers). Every game counts with the AL East division slipping away and the Red Sox only a half game up in the Wild Card standings.
Given the lack of offense from Varitek and Gonzalez/Green, I don't see why the Red Sox think that there is any more margin of error with their lack of
offense by sticking with Anderson vs. Reddick, even for three or four games. With the benefit of hindsight, Theo has made of number of questionable decisions
this year (signing Smoltz and Penny, not acquiring a major league shortstop when Lowrie was experiencing discomfort prior to the July 31 trading deadline) and
this appears to be the latest blunder.

He was also hitting .188/.212/.406 and clearly isn't ready to hit at the Major League level. He struck out 9 times in 33 plate appearances. He showed an inability at times to recognize breaking pitches and showed a mediocre approach at the plate. Anderson may not be a slugger by any stretch. However, his .239/.322/.319 line in the Majors this year is better than Reddick's. He's also a fine fielder by most defensive metrics, one or two plays last night notwithstanding. |

Reddick butchered a couple of balls in the outfield as well the last couple of games, with one of them a key error. He's been over matched by high
fastballs and was chasing a good amount of them for his strikeouts. He needs more seasoning and it was time for him to work on some things down in AAA to ramp
into the off-season and ST next season. He projects as a better player than Brian Anderson down the line, but its hard to find how this is a blunder. Reddick
is 1 for his last 16 and has a k to walk of 9 to 1 in his short stint. The flashes of power have been excellent and exciting, but as AB said he's not
ready to consistently hit at the major league level yet.

At this point, it's better to be getting Reddick consistent AB's and playing time in AAA and at the same time evaluate Anderson to see if he's a
candidate for the 4th/5th OF spot next year. Reddick misplayed a ball Friday night, Anderson (in my mind) misplayed that ball that fell in last night......so
you're going to get growing pains with either of them at this point......

Fair points. However, I think most would agree that Anderson is the not the answer either, even for a few days. He couldn't even crack the White Sox
lineup when they were hurting for outfielders. The lack of bench strength or major league ready position players in the system continues to hurt the Red Sox
this season.

Seriously, how far down do you expect to have "Major League ready position players"?

The average is only low because he didn't get a lot of hits in the last few days. He has shown power and good plate disapline. I don't think its a bad thing to send him down to Triple A but to say he isn't ready to hit at the Major League level is a stretch to me. I suspect him back up in Septiember. |

I agree he'll be back up in September. My point is that to assert that he's an obviously better offensive option at this point than Anderson is
foolish. I'll stand by my comments, but if consistency of playing time is the issue, I don't see how that changes over one, four-game stint filling in
for Drew.
