I dont feel trading c-buch or Ellsbury is needed.

soxprospects wrote:That's a very good package except I would substitute Buchholz with Ellsbury. I think keeping Buchholz is way more important than keeping Ellsbury. Kalish is a very realistic bet to take over CF in 2011 full time or at least splitting time with Mike Cameron, while there's really noone in the system that can replace Buchholz's value. Not trading for AG would be a mistake. Getting a young, still developing 40HR/gold glove player for $11m over two years is too good of a deal, especially
considering the imminent needs of the Red Sox at 3B (Youk would fill in) and for a big bat. Epstein won't give away Ellsbury. At the same time, Hoyer
cannot afford to send AG somewhere else without helping his team/calming the fan base with some Major-League ready player(s), plus some serious talent.
MLB ready players: This brings us first of all to Buchholz and Bard, both of which I would give away. As much as I love Buchholz's stuff and potential and Bards fireball and K/9 ratio, Buchholz will never have the mindset of Beckett/Lackey type pitchers, and relievers are plain and simply replaceable. With the strong rotation set in Boston right now, we can expect our starters to go deep anyways. Top-Talent: Kelly and Westmoreland are obviously the frontrunners here. They're both more than exciting talents right now, but have not proven their abilities at any level higher than single A. Kelly could be simply replaced by Chapman, and Westmoreland will be knocking on the CF door in a few years, where Ellsbury is hopefully still stellar. I'd rather send Kelly away, Westmoreland has IMO a higher projection (five tool!!) than Kelly (No 2/3 Starter). Lots of pitching for Hoyer, but he'll certainly want some A+ position talent, of which we only have Westmoreland, which again, Epstein won't let go. Tough situation. I am confident in the current lineup and would not be worried at all if we started the season as is. I believe that Epstein will to what he can to obtain AG without giving up Ellsbury and Westmoreland. The only way I can see this happen right now is in a trade that involves more than the two teams. E.g. Kotchman/Max Ramirez/Reddick could be sent away for a position talent, which could then go to the Padres. |

Ellsbury, Max Ramirez, Lars, Kotchman and Bowden. Would that get it done?

A package around Ellsbury would be preferable to one around Buchholz. Something like Ellsbury, Bard, Kelly, Kalish/Reddick, Ramirez/Exposito.

How about,
Bowden Fuentes Wagner and any other pitcher not named Kelly or Buccholz(maybe Weiland, Fife, or Alex Wilson as 4th slot candidates) It would deplete our system a bit, but at Gonzalez's age, I think it's definately worth it. |

Some rumors say SD is interested in prospects only. If so, maybe Kelly, Kalish/Reddick, Ramirez/Exposito, plus any three other prospects except Iglesias or WML gets it done. If I had to I'd include WML if Ellsbury is not in the deal. Iglesias is the only prospect I'd consider untouchable at this point. |

Gonzalez would complete this team. We should be willing to give up alot. How about:
Buchholz Westmoreland Reddick Max Ramirez Delcarmen Im not sold on westmoreland yet, too injury prone thus far |

On NESN tonight Gammons, in his inimitable Gammons way of throwing things out matter of factly, mentioned that Jed Hoyer "loves Derrik Gibson". Something to think about when formulating your fantasy trade scenarios, esp. since I have to imagine Gibson, although a very good prospect, is someone the Red Sox would be willing to part with for a player like Agon.

I really don't understand the morbid fascination with Gonzalez, he's been a star for 1 year, and good every other year. He plays first base not shortstop. Coming to the AL East from NL west is going to eliminate all possible positive home park effects on his stats. If your going to suck it up and put a hurting to your farm system at least have them play a premium position.

MaleNurse2010 wrote:Or an available position? Players of his quality hit the market very rarely, and even less often during their prime. We have no 3B and no DH next year, although Youk could conceivably play either or both. It's also possible that our DH this year will bite it. At this point we're in a wait and see part of the year, but my guess is that if we need that kind of player, either this year or in the offseason, he'll be one of the best available possibilities. Gibson is also a wait and see guy, as his status could change quickly and drastically this year, especially with the all-projection team status he aquired on some top ten lists.

MaleNurse2010 wrote:You aren't going to find a bat like Gonzalez very frequently, he hit 40 home runs last year playing half of his games in Petco Park. The NL West is no AL East but the pitching in that division is nothing to sneeze at. He has to face or has faced Lincecum, Cain, Haren, Billinglsey, Webb (over the past few years), Jimenez..etc and I'm probably forgetting some obvious ones. His stats away from Petco are unreal and he's just hitting his prime. His glove and range at first is top-notch, he's arguable the best defensive first basemen in baseball. The Red Sox don't have a bat like his anywhere in their system. I don't want the Sox to overpay for him either, but Jed Hoyer is no fool and it will cost a lot. Anderson is safe because he doesn't really fit the Padres unless they want to keep Banks in the outfield and put Anderson at 1st, which could happen. I bet Jed wants Ellsbury or Buchholz, Anderson, two of Kalish/Reddick/Westmoreland, and Bard.

Since it will cost a premium amount of prospects to get him, what about waiting until he reaches (or at least gets closer to) free agency? Since the Yankees won't be in the bidding for him (since they already have a Texiera at 1st and even they won't waste either of them at DH) the free agent price won't be overly inflated. And even a delayed trade lets the Padres enjoy his lower salary and hence reduce what they can ask for him.

ESPN just showed a graphic showing that over the past 3 seasons gonzalez has hit about 50% of his homeruns down the left feild line and about 40% of his home runs down the right field line... with hardly any to dead center... He's the definition of built for Fenway... I want him... give San Diego every prospect we have... like the entire rosters of all of our farm teams I don't care anymore after seein that graphic
http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=300607122 they show the graphic at about the 40 second mark Look... all you have to do is put the Lime... in the Coconut... and drink them both up... |

I don't see how he'd be available at the deadline. The Padres have the second-best record in the NL, Gonzalez is their best player, and he's only earning $4.75 million this year... I'm not saying the Padres will actually make a playoff run; I'm saying, he's worth more in the form of gate receipts than he is in prospects.
