Each team will normally select 7-8 players, of which all but one need to be in AA or AAA on August 1. I think he already knows where he'll be, or Hazen does, and one of them brought it up in an interview. As long as Daeges is healed, he's a lock, and Engel is likely too. But Place, Navarro, Nava or Carter would seem to make more sense than Khoury. I think the last spot could be any one catcher, be it Wagner, Expo, Fed-Ex, or even Kottaras if that's allowed. We might see Capellan instead of Cox if they move him up after his recent resurgence. Also, Hagadone has to be a consideration for either Fife's Fall league spot, or a winter league opening at a later date. Thanks, SP. Should we have a thread for that second league? Veteran Member Posts: 178 07/15/09 2:09 PM	Would like to second Daeges going to the AFL league, or a weaker Winter league somewhere when he can get some guaranteed AB's with him losing nearly this entire season already. Bad for a guy that got a late start on his career anyway when drafted (almost 23) and now losing virtually another full year is making his career track really hard towards getting to the bigs, even with a nice stick. How about Lavarnway to get more practice with his footwork behind the plate and his catching skills in general, not to mention just cut down on all of those PB's? My GUESS is that if Lavarnway were going to a fall league, it would be the lower one, and it would be to work on a new position. They also prob won't do that yet until he's a)overtaken by another catching prospect (Chen, Vasquez or Killeen?), and b)gets to work with our catching guru (forget name) at Salem next year, and fails.

The HWB participants the last few years: 2008 - Jose Capellan Jon Hee (because he is a native, he was basically an extra player on hand) Ryan Kalish Yamaico Navarro Dustin Richardson 2007 - Honolulu Sharks Daniel Bard Argenis Diaz Jimmy James Jason Place 2006 - West Oahu CaneFires Jeff Corsaletti John Otness Ryan Phillips So assuming the same rationale is used there, that's players who are headed to Salem or transitioning positions somehow. How's about Weeden, Hissey, Lee? As far as the regular AFL, I think Yamaico Navarro is a likely candidate - he's about at that level and could use the extra at-bats after his injury.

Is it really instructional, or is it a showcase, or is it an extension of the season, or some combination? If it truly is instructional then the players being sent should be ones that merit some additional more focused attention. If it is a showcase then players should be sent who the Sox want to show off for one reason or another. If it is an extension of the season then players who missed a lot of time becausing of platooning, or injuries, or just being held back, should be sent. Maybe a couple from each category? Also, does anyone think there is a chance that Navarro will be promoted to Portland before Aug. 1, if at all this year? With the time he missed, and with his performance, he seems like someone the Sox would want to accelerate.

Not going to pick 3 outfielders. Since I picked 2 outfielders and a catcher, I assumed the fourth would need to be a non-1B infielder. Place is a strong possibility instead of Engel or if Daeges is not ready, but chose Engel because he has 60% of the PAs as Place. Nava could only go if he is in AA by August 1 (unless he is the sub-AA pick). Navarro is not eligible to play - he will play in the Dominican Winter League. Wagner has already gone to the AFL. Kotteras is not eligible. I chose Expo over FedEx because I believe he will be in Portland by August 1. FedEx could possibly be the sub-AA pick but my guess is that they will not choose him over Expo. Capellan is not eligible (see Navarro). Hagadone was my backup pick to Fife. They may be satisfied if Hags works at UWashington. If Kelly goes anywhere, it will be to the 2nd league to play SS.

He's probably better off just going to the instructional league for catcher/1B training than to a fall/winter league. Same with Ty Weeden and Carson Blair.

Is that the type of thing that could happen?

It's not inconceivable that one of them (ok, just Navarro) could move to AA soon, especially if the Sox want him to go to the Fall league. And the wiki allows the Sox to choose one "foreign" player; does this mean one guy without US citizenship? Also, now there's a Dominican Winter League? I'm so confused, but also excited for off-season baseball. Lastly, if the Sox really wanted to get Kottaras some extra at-bats, could they demote him for a few days, and assign him to the team; the wiki says a full year of MLB experience would make a player ineligible? Two things - 1) The foreign player has to be from a juridiction that does not have its own winter league. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/winterleagues/about/?league=afl&id=player_elig Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements: All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1. One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team. One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league. No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft. To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons. Note that the last bullet point may exclude Daeges from playing in the AFL. 2) Kottaras cannot be demoted without exposing him to waivers. I assume that won't happen. On Johnson, he is certainly a candidate to go to the AFL to convert to the bullpen. I'd much rather send him to instructionals to make the conversion or simply let him rest. His numbers are so bad that it makes you wonder if he's hurt or simply being exposed. If the latter, sending him to a hitting league does not seem to make sense to me.
