WOW....I don't know about the rest of you, but I didn't see that coming. I've seen Place several times, but just once this year...and he seems to
make more contact....but it doesn't seem to translate in to much power. This will be interesting!

Congrats to Place. However, this is shocking to me, considering that Nava and Lin both seem more ready to produce at AA. Place hasn't been bad per se, but
his numbers are far from great. Does anyone have an explanation why this move would be made? Is he starting to run out ot time? Are they trying to get him away
from his family? Are there any more straws to grasp at? ADD: I should mention that in addition to being excited personally for Place, I'm excited that the
Sox think he has a chance to produce at the next level. I think we should view this as good news.
I hope not the RS would not take the Nats lightly and aware of what they did to the Blue Jays & Yankees. Just sweep them
by play hard & show the Nats why they're best in AL. -MLBDreams

Surprising move to say the least. I really didn't expect him in Portland until next year at the earliest. But congrats to him on his promotion.
I'll be there, watching the Sox representation of mid-rotation starters. -TheGoldenGreek33 on Casey Kelly

Congrats to Jason. I'm excited to see what he does in Portland and very excited that the FO thinks he's developed to the point where he's ready
for AA.
Go get'em kid! |

Is it likely that he was asked to concentrate on contact, which means that his power stats were down? I've been pleased with his drop in Ks, and his
batting average was decent. This is his reward for doing what was asked. Remember Hanley's weak Portland stats, only to learn he was told to focus on going
the other way.

Interesting move, I thought they might wait to see if he could really put together some sort of a hot streak before doing this. I can see both sides of it. On
one hand, he has always been highly regarded, but has generally failed to live up to expectations thus far (not that he has been terrible, just not what was
hoped). So the decision must have been made that results were not going to dictate his promotion and its time to test him at AA and let him sink or swim there.
On the other hand, I could also understand if they had just left him at Salem and made him prove that he really deserved this. I'm sure most of you read that Globe article (as I recall it was posted on here) this offseason where Place seemed to be under the asumption that he would be in Portland in no time, or at least phrasing/quotes made it seem that way. To me, his time in Salem never really forced the FO's hand so this seemed misplaced. Either way, I think his time at AA this year and to start next (I'm assuming) will determine once and for all if he is ever going to live up to expectations. Add: Also, Congrats to Jason and good luck. |

Would like to hear from people that watched him play extensively at Salem regarding this. His careers stats thus far really question this with how much
difference he will be seeing with pitching breaking ball wise at AA and how much his K total may once again rise and I wonder why Expo was not promoted
instead..
Is this a way to nudge him along as a former 1st round pick, since he has pretty much been a disappointment so far? Edit: Congrats.. In questioning why, forgot to offer congratulations on the promotion..

Surprising to be sure. I think they're forcing the kid's hand; 3 1/2 years in the system and it's time to see exactly where he's at.
They've invested a lot in him and given him plenty of opportunity, including batting leadoff for a spell last season, just to get his bat kick-started. I
dunno about this move but he remains a big, athletic, RH bat, with plus-plus power potential; you just gotta stay patient, I suppose. Good luck, Jason.

Steve Dillard wrote:Good summary, Steve, and quite possibly a comparable situation. Lot of people here are "surprised" by the move but we don't know what Place has been working on all this time, and the specifics of what the FO has asked him to work on. We only see the stats, but sometimes there's more going on...... |

This has nothing to do with Place running out of time. He's 21yrs and 2 months old. That's young for AA, although I can't find the age advancement
scale thread. The Sox for whatever reason felt he was ready for or would be better off in AA. It may very well be a reward for successfully focusing on and
achieving the things he's been asked to focus on. It may not be translating into great numbers, but they must feel he's been accomplishing something.
He got 113 AB's in 2006. Then, it's been 2-1/2 years. He's not running out of time. This was discussed a while back in a Jason Place thread, too.
On the flip side, is there a reason Reid Engel started in Portland? He didn't seem like he was ready and he was young for AA; although he's held his own.

Maybe he will end up like another 1st round, high schooler:
http://www.thebaseballcub...ayers/N/trot-nixon.shtml Pretty similar #'s in some regards to Trot coming up through the system.

IT only took 35 years but now it looks like the Sox front office has finally found the 2nd coming of RICE/LYNN/EVANS,,,,,, KALISH/REDDICK/PLACE.

Age advancement scale:
http://wiki.soxprospects.com/Age+Advancement+Scale I believe this would put Place fourth on the scale, just ahead of Kalish. |

Could Reddick to Pawtucket be the countermove? The Pawsox have room for another OF and Reddick spent 1 year in AA.

Bates is 25 and his 1st year at AAA. I am targeting career AAA guys Guzman, Ochoa,McAnulty, Gonzalez, Zink, Ambres, Chavez, Cherry, McBeth.. Need I go on?
Granted a couple have been a warm body on the bench, even played for the Sox (Bailey, VanEvery, Velazqyuez) but why fill up a AAA roster with these guys.. Like
2/3rds of it???
