Head, a recent graduate of Whitewater High School, worked out at Minute Maid Park (home of the Astros), Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park the week before. During his workout at Fenway, the third baseman clobbered a ball over the Green Monster and said 'I want to play for the Red Sox.' The Red Sox wanted to select Head as well, but they had other needs to fill first.

"They told Miles they would give him what he was looking for, but he would be selected in a later round," said Beverly. The Heads had no idea just how late a round Miles would be selected in and the waiting game was a bit stressful.

"I just feel relief more than anything," said Miles, praising the Red Sox personnel. "I really liked the scouts and just thought everybody was very hands on and courteous."

There is a lot to like about Miles Head too and the Red Sox weren't the only ones interested in a player who hit .528 in his senior season with 14 home runs, four grand slams and 48 RBIs with a 1.260 slugging percentage. In the fourth round, several teams expressed their interest in the third baseman, but he and his family remained patient and waited for the Red Sox to come calling. They did in the 26th round with the 798th pick.

Head had other options. He had signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Georgia and play ball for Coach Dave Perno. Instead, he will sign a contract with the Boston Red Sox and report to Ft. Myers, Fla. in a few weeks for rookie ball.

Bugary slugged his way into the University of California, Berkeley following his senior year at Monterey High in 2005, then pitched his way into the 2009 Major League Baseball draft.

Admittedly a changed person on the field and in the classroom, Bugary was a 15th round selection Wednesday by the Boston Red Sox in the second of three days of the MLB draft.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound left-hander has one year of eligibility left at Cal, but said he was going to sign with the Red Sox.

Not only will Bugary likely be assigned to their short-season team in the New York-Penn League, but he's only one class away from earning a degree in Environmental Policy from a school ranked academically among the Top 20 in the country.
