Shannon Wilkerson was named the Division II position player of the year and national player of the year by Rawlings and the American Baseball Coaches
Association.
Wilkerson hit .441 while cracking 24 homers and driving in 82 runs. Some major league scouts feel Wilkerson could be drafted in the top seven rounds in the amateur draft. |

The longtime Augusta State baseball coach watched his junior outfielder develop into the best Division II player in the land. Now, Fite will wait to see when Wilkerson gets picked when the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins today. Fite has never had a player selected early in the draft. Two Augusta State players were selected as high as the 12th round: outfielder JuJu Foreman (Arizona, 2000), and pitcher Mitch Douglas (Arizona, 2002). This year, Fite expects Wilkerson to go somewhere between the fourth and seventh rounds. "This year we'll be paying attention a little earlier," Fite said. Since finishing his junior season last month, Wilkerson has been racking up postseason honors. The Dacula, Ga., outfielder was named the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Player of the Year. He also was named the Rawlings Gold Glove Defensive Player of the Year after not committing an error in 146 chances. Wilkerson also was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Player of the Year. In addition, he was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year after leading the league in hitting (.441), slugging (.891), runs (82), hits (101), home runs (24) and triples (seven). "He's had an incredible year, probably the best of anybody at this institution," Fite said. "He's improved every year we've had him. I think he'll continue to get better at the next level." |

Is it me or do there seem to be more picks than normal from Puerto Rico?

Renfroe is going to be a lonely guy in the infield at this rate.

re: Puerto Rico, I had the same thought, but am not really interested in going through old logs to figure it out.
Loving the draft so far, will love it more once these guys start to play.
"Pedroia thinks he's yet to see a pitcher that he thinks is any good," Murphy said. "That's his secret. He's 5-foot-6, balding, can't run, can't throw, he's weak, and it's true. But he believes that he's as strong and as big and as fast as anybody."

I cannot see Volz signing with us. He's better off going back in the draft.

Gotta like Kendal Volz at this stage in the game. Nice pick.
aminahyaquin: Alou is a 37 year old 7 time MVP with a .347 lifetime batting average and a world of hustle. he
can golden glove field in his sleep.
tGG: Alou is actually 42, has never won an MVP, has a .303 lifetime batting average, and is mediocre at best in the field. joshv02: But, other than that, you're wrong. |

Volz had a terrible season. He was one of the most disappointing prospects in the country.
