So....what is the interest among the board members? Who do you people support? Me, I'm an Arsenal fan although this year looks a bit rough for us. Hopefully this can get more responses than brox got in the MMA thread.

Anyone here a fan of the real football? The 2007-2008 season begins this weekend with the Community Shield in England. Manchester United vs. Chelsea should be a good matchup at 10am ET on Sunday along with opening round matchups in the French and Scottish league. Also, the draw for the third qualifying round for the Champions League occurred this morning with the games to be played later this month. After an exciting summer of transfers among players and managers, it looks like this season will be enjoyable yet again. So make sure to get GolTV and Fox Soccer Channel, because what else would you do on a Saturday or Sunday morning?

After watching the recent World Cup, I have begun to be intrigued by international soccer and the love and passion that the rest of the world has for it.
How do you guys really pick a team to root for? Are you guys originally from there or did you guys just decide to root for a pretty good, well-know club? Just wondering. |

When I finally "picked" Arsenal, it was because I spent a semester in London roughly two miles away from the stadium. It was also the time they were on their Champions League run, so it was an exciting time to be around Le Arse. I guess I'm a bit of a bandwagon fan, but the only team closer to me was West 'am but they suck on and off the pitch. So I went with a team slightly further away and one that actually makes an impact in Europe.
I must admit, I am jealous of the Liverpool fans. The Scousers might be the scumbags of the UK, but their atmosphere is second to none in professional sports. Hearing the entire stadium sing "You'll never walk alone" was perhaps the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed at a sporting event. Only college sports here could rival that. |

I was thinking of starting this thread, but was unsure if there would be any support for it.

ASAL, that might have been worth it if you hadn't taken an entire day and several attempts to get the graphic to work.

The Premiership season has begun, and already Wayne Rooney is out for a few months with a hairline fracture in the foot. Thankfully (for ManU fans) is that Carlos Tevez is finally coming to Old Trafford and will be able to replace the overrated Rooney. On to the games...
In England, Arsenal recovers from a first minute goal allowed to score two late goals to beat Fulham at Emirates, Manchester United can't score a goal in a draw at home to Reading, Chelsea allows 2 but beats Birmingham 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, Tottenham falls 1-0 at Sunderland - who spent the last year in the second divsion, and Liverpool wins 2-1 at Aston Villa. Around Europe, Rangers are atop the Scottish table with 6 points with Celtic at 4, Bayern Munich opens with a 3 goal win over Hansa Rostock, and Lyon has already lost a game this year when it took them until November to do so last year. Still another 2 weeks for the Spanish and Italian leagues to begin. Ahead this week is the third round of the Champions League on Tuesday and Wednesday with a lot of interesting matchups featuring some prominent teams facing some smaller Eastern European teams. Also a few mid-week Premiership matches, with Liverpool-Chelsea and the Manchester Derby on the weekend. And don't forget Beckham against the Revs on Channel 38 tonight at 7 (although he might not be playing). |

Gerrard's free kick goal was on Sportscenter's top plays of the week this morning. What a beauty.

Quote: Overrated Rooney?? Curse you sir. Carlos Tevez and his horribly scarred ass, can piss off. Now that is an overrated/under burned player. I'm still convinced he is only playing in England to earn some money, and waste a bench spot cause he is pissy over the Falklands. All Argentinian footballers can tear and ACL. |

I hope every player they have who doesn't play for England, breaks both their ankles but it is still impressive every time you hear it.

I root for Barca but follow all the other leagues relatively closely as well.
Anybody who talks shit about Carlitos doesn't know what they're talking about. The man is a beast and he's gonna show it after finally getting to play on a club with good players around him. Oh and yeah, Messi's the best player in the world. |

Lehman gave up another incredibly soft goal this week, this time sticking his hand out to catch a shot only to see it go off his fingertips and in. Unfortunately the offense couldn't save him this time as Arsenal draw at Blackburn.
Manchester City is now 3-0-0 under Sven after defeating Manchester United 1-0. Forget who scored the goal, Micah Richards perhaps, but it had a nasty screwball action on it after it deflected off the defender. United is struggling so far. Liverpool got robbed of a victory at home to Chelsea due to a phantom penalty call. There was clearly a collision in the box, but it was incidental and the Chelsea player (Shaun Wright-Phillips perhaps) wasn't going to touch the ball anyways. The ref has been demoted for next weekend's games as a result of this call (why can't MLB do this). Lampard finally converted on a penalty kick, wasting a great effort by Fernando Torres for his first goal in the Prem. Elsewhere, Lyon loses another one, Bayern wins 4-0 at Bremen, and no major upsets in the Champions League. This week, Arsenal hosts Man City and United hosts Tottenham while La Liga opens with Real facing Atletico at the Bernabeu. Juventus also makes their return to Serie A. |

Opening weekend for la liga and serie a
Watched 3 serie a games this weekend Juve looked good in a 5-1 victory over Livorno, but the team still lacked some defensive cohesiveness. Inter's Materazzi-less defense did not look great against a solid Udinese squad getting a 1-1 result on 90th minute own goal. The Palermo - Roma game was one of the most entertaining games i have seen in a while. It was a back and forth offensive battle for about 80min before both teams began running out of gas. Roma was the stronger team and won 2-0 but the score could have easily been 5-4. In Spain Real grabbed a 2-1 win on saturday over Atltico thanks to new signing Sneijder Sevilla Defender Antonio Puerta, who i believed got his first cap for the spanish national team on wednesday, suffered multiple heart attacks on saturday night on the pitch and nearly swallowed his tongue on the field and is currently is in unstable condition link Just got to hope he pulls through, some how Sevilla managed win win 5-1. Bara tied 0-0 looking fairly lackluster by what i have read. Sign up for the soxprospects map link
