Considering that Boras is Drew's agent, and that Heyman and Boras share an office, I'm assuming this is accurate. As a big fan of Drew's, I think this is probably the best thing for him. It would be sad to see him as a 4th outfielder for league minimum. There's a huge number of aging OF/DH's still on the market, stuck between choosing retirement or a minor league deal. Detroit was reportedly in on him, but Marlins have always been the most involved with the Cubs in the rumors more lately. Rookie Posts: 6 01/24/12 5:18 PM	Don't see how Cespedes makes sense after Ross and as Sox are obviously trying to stay under the cap this year? Not sure if Sox would be able to sign Soler without $ going against it? If possible would see him as a much more logical target.

It'd be like any amateur Latin American signing, and wouldn't count against the CBT. Cespedes, on the other hand, is likely to get a major league deal. http://twitter.com/YirmiyahuStats

I've been watching the DWL and my assessment is that he'll have a tough transition to MLB pitching. In Boston it will be even tougher. I'd much rather sign Jorge Soler who is a few years away and you can teach him a bit of plate discipline, as most Cuban hitter are very agressive. Am Dominican and you??

If not, I can't see the Sox making a move. Soler is probably at least 3 years away and if the Sox want to stay under the tax threashold, it probably means no more signings this year and 1 less next year.

My sense is that if Boston wants him they're going to have to trump offers from probably many interested teams that want him just as bad. My hope is that Boston gets him - I think he'd be a fantastic prospect, but it's certainly not the sense that I have.

In otherwords you basically make the Sox 2nd yr option negligible (say $1M) so he automatically declines, but the buyout guarantees him $8-10M but he doesn't get the balance til Nov so the AAV is lower and if some money is carried into 2013 it's OK with the greater $ coming off the books.

There will be no large contracts handed out. It won't be that hard for other teams to outbid the Sox for players they want as it has been in the past.

Not so sure about that with potentially $50-55M coming off the books and the lux tax threshold going up in 14. There's room there for at least one big deal (Hamels? Cain?) and still assembling some talented parts.

In this particular instance (signing Soler) they can still behave like a player development machine and throw some cash around and sign a very good prospect. Of course, they can and might get outbid but they'll be in on him. I have no doubt.

There is no reason to think that the Sox' newfound frugality extends to amateur signings. In fact, there's very good reasons (the new CBA due to come into effect, the revamping of the Sox' international scouting department, Cherington's background in the area) to think the Sox will be even more aggressive signing IFA's than they have in the past. ADD: I'm slow. What Boris said. But not what Guidas said. I don't expect the Sox to spend next offseason either, so that they can slip under the CBT threshold in 2013. ADD2: Guidas, I know you always think the Sox should throw around money, but I don't see it happening next offseason either. I have $33M coming off the books (Ortiz, Matsuzaka, Jenks, Ross, Shoppach). Youk's AAV will rise by $2.72M due to 2013 being a team option year. And arbitration raises should total about $15M. In my mind, this type of deal should have been in place already before your trade Scutaro. In Ben we trust? We'll see.
