Scutaro + SP Spaghetti > Oswalt + Aviles/Punto.Not that it matters now that it looks like this isn't going to happen, but I would say that Scutaro + Spaghetti monster < Oswalt + Iglesias. You'd pretty much be punting the offense from the SS position, but the overall offense would still be one of the best in the league and with Oswalt the pitching would be very good as well.

The Red Sox claim they need to dump payroll to add pitching - which to me is silly, but if the Sox were to trade Youks or Scutaro, it would merely be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, and honestly, as badly as the Sox need pitching, dealing Scutaro or Youks would open up black holes because neither Middlebrooks or Iglesias are likely to be ready this season - in Middlebrooks' case at least not until the all-star break and in Iglesias's case, he'd be so overmatched and it would be so detrimental to his development - the guy is having trouble cracking a .600 OPS in the minors.Youks and Scutaro both get on case, which is important when you consider that last season LF, RF, and C didn't have .300 OBP. Replacing Youks or Scutaro would exacerbate the problem. The twitter from Troy Renck didn't make much sense to me as neither Punto, Aviles, or Iglesias are options to be starting SS for the Sox in 2012.

I think Floyds salary is valued at under 4 million (according to reports) so maybe him and a Cody Ross. That would at least upgrade the rotation and give us a good platoon match and insurance incase Carl has a set back or two. Problem is Floyd cost prospects.I still think/hope that ownership comes around to going over the tax (sign Oswalt) and realizes we have a very good chance to stay under it next season with some young guys ready.

Listen, Theo phan-boyz, your crazy spin can't hide the fact that Terry Francoma is a TOTAL MORAN, John Lackey not only walks too many people but also rapes, kills, and then eats kittens, and JD Drew actually died 2 months ago and is only playing as a partially-reanimated corpse. - BriantheTaoist

The real cost is $8.55M ($7M + $1.55M in taxes) plus prospects for Floyd, or $11.2M ($8M + $3.2M in taxes) for Oswalt.
