Which is a tribute to their depth, considering they don't have a slam-dunk Top 50 overall prospect.Comment-I am pleasantly surprised that BA has the Red Sox system rated that high.

I honestly think the Sox should sell high before the ugly BB/K numbers really start impacting his triple slash and some of the prospect luster wears off. I have a sinking feeling his best projection is Brandon Inge with a bit more power. That's still certainly a very useful player, but a far cry from the Evan Longoria comparisons you hear once in a while.

It seems like the general consensus is that he's a guy who will likely be an above average regular who might make a couple All-Star games during his peak.

His pitch recognition isn't great and his aggressiveness means he chases breaking balls. He certainly seems like a hard-working kid, but that is no guarantee of improvement, especially since his BB/K has only gotten worse as he's moved up the ladder. For a guy in AAA, his plate coverage and pitch recognition still have significant concerns and he still needs quite a bit of polish to reach his ceiling.

You're right in saying that all prospects struggle with plate discipline and plate coverage, but Middlebrooks is especially poor in those areas and yet he is almost universally praised by scouts and analysts. I believe that strikeout and especially BB/K (along with ISO) are the most important statistical indicators for most minor league hitters and, as this study bears out, are fairly predictive of major league success. Middlebrooks can certainly improve on his numbers, especially with a full year in AAA, but I'm much less bullish on him than the scout/analyst consensus and think that his peripherals will catch up to him sooner rather than later.
