I think it would be an upgrade from last year but thats not saying much. I do think Bard will slide back to the pen when Dice K comes back to help limit his innings. I dont think he pitches much more than 140 or so. I think this would set him up to go into 2013 without training wheels and Lackey at the 5th spot. Lets face it he makes to much to put in long relief and hopefully he will come back healthy from TJ and be a good (although highly paid) back end guy.

Bard will have his innings capped if he sticks in the rotation and if he goes back to the bullpen we need another legitimate starter to finish the year either way. I could see them trying to get a Garza deal done but I am not sure we have the pitching that Theo would want in return. What type of package would we be looking at for Garza? Ranaudo, Lavarnway (not sure if he is a fit being an NL team), Jacobs, Wilson? Can it get done without Xander or WMB being involved?

Assuming cheap internal options like WMB, Doubront, Lavarnway etc are going to Chicago for Garza or Gavin Floyd. I think Floyd would be around 8 AAV and Garza close to 10. I really think a one year deal will give us more options going forward and allow us to use homegrown players to fill some holes next season. Not to mention maybe one of the top FA SPs hits the market.

The manager on the move was on MLB Network Radio this afternoon and said he would be meeting with Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and Carl Crawford this weekend in Texas. “There is no, from what I gather, any adversarial relationship with either situation. I just want to talk to Carl about his plan for next year," Valentine said. "Talking to [Dustin] Pedroia, who has had a couple of text messages with him, Carl is working his butt off and doing everything he can to put up and make people shut up, and that’s all I’m asking.”
