His profile is Kalish without the speed and slightly less power. I honestly think he'd outperform Kalish, at least for the first few months of the season. And his salary is reasonable, especially since the Sox appeared resigned to spending over the tax this year.

I also don't understand Sweeney coming along in the trade as he is a one-tool player (defense) who is nothing more than a late inning replacement or depth for Pawtuckett. He is not someone who you can afford to play even on a RH/LH platoon basis as he can't hit. You know, his career OBP in the majors is higher than Reddick's in the majors or in the minors.IMHO, Sweeney is nothing more than a salary dump and a 5th OF at best with little to no power and great defense. Certainly not someone who warrants regular at bats for a contending team.

That being said, his injury history as well as his propensity to pitch up in the strike zone and also to rely (a lot) on his fastball scare the hell out of me. Ben has set this up very well in that we have 3 good young potential closers on this team now, meaning there are options if Bailey misses time or stumbles at all. Overall good return for the cost and I think the team will handle Bailey cautiously given his injury history. I'm very interested to see the remaining moves now that we appear to have completed the work on the 'pen with this move.

He has a better career OPS than Sam Fuld, basically the same as Brett Gardner, is a much better defender than both and both got "regular at bats" for teams that beat us in the division this past year.

Good OBP, good fielder. But Brett Gardner has been the best defensive corner outfielder in the majors last two years, and it's not even close.
