Veteran Member Posts: 1130 12/21/11 9:07 PM	Well obviously, but soft tossing lefties don't usually fare to well in Fenway. Joe Saunders may give us 200 innings, but going from a giant park in Arizona to a tiny Fenway Park, even worse it being in the AL East, his ERA will rise significantly. Batters hit .266 off of him last year, could you imagine what that would look like with him pitching in the AL East? He also gave up 29 Home Runs. No Thank You on Joe Saunders. I would much rather Jackson over Saunders as he has some experience and plenty of stuff to make it in our division. He's not very consistent and I'm pretty concerned about his .290 BAA in the national league, but I like him much more than Saunders. My first choice would be Kuroda to fill this role. Veteran Member Posts: 554 12/21/11 9:14 PM	Totally agree Grandsalami. We kept Wake for years with the idea that he would eat innings and keep us close. No idea what someone like Saunders is asking for, but to me he is the minimum of what we need. Certainly prefer a few others that have been mentioned so much, but this guy may fit the budget. My preference has always been to improve the rotation depth. A middle reliever is easier to pick up. Several members have been down on Saunders, but I do think he can, at least, handle 180 plus innings for us, and it will be better than using Andrew Miller. My focus would always have a strong rotation and fill in from there. The Sox teams will always score, but to have positive results year-in and year-out on the road and in the playoffs, we need guys who can get us consistently to the 7th inning and beyond.

Because we need a guy who can take the ball and give us innings. as much as i like oswalt, with his back issues, he prob wont give us 200 innings

Posts: 1411 12/21/11 11:54 PM Forum Moderator	Edwin Jackson has been worth 3.8, 3.8, and 3.6 WAR the last three seasons, with significant stints in the AL in all three seasons. He's only 28 years old and has pitched 200 innings in each of the last three years (and 180 innings the year before that). He is very underrated.

Maybe he's matured but I think he would quickly replace John Lackey in the hearts of Red Sox fans. Like him better than Saunders, but that's not saying much.

Veteran Member Posts: 48 12/23/11 10:44 PM	I'd be happy satisfied with either Kuroda or Oswalt at this point. I don't think Jackson's control is good enough for the Sox to sign him to a 4 year deal. I'd prefer short-term flexibility with Kuroda (2 years) or Oswalt (1 year). If they succeed in signing one of those pitchers then they see if they can deal for Bailey as Bard would take the 5th spot or if they can't deal for Bailey they most likely make Bard the closer with Melancon setting up and they find a starter off the scrap heap for the #5 spot and hope that Daisuke comes back healthy by August 1st. My guess is that the Sox will eventually make the deal with Oakland for Bailey.
