Given his age I'm more a fan of signing Jackson than I would be of Ozzie (Oswalt). Still rather have Darvish long term, but Jackson may be a nice consolation price. Dude has had declining OPS for the past two year (95OPS+ last year), is not a shortstop long term and can reportedly be a bit of a clubhouse problem. Not to mention he makes $46 mil over the next three years and has already caused a bit of a stir regarding moving of short. Ellsbury, meanwhile, just had a breakout 30-30 season, is still an arb player and there is no doubt he's a centerfielder long term. If I'm the Marlins I'm salivating at the idea of swapping Hanley for Ellsbury. To say that the only way it happens is if the Sox throw Youk on top of that is even more of a stretch. That said I don't see the Sox making a move to bring back Hanley right now. It'd strip an already shallow system of any assets they have that are close to contributing at a major league level.

I can't see them trading for a guy like Ellsbury who would be in line for a $100M long term deal. I'm just not sure the Sox have enough guys at the top end of the system to get Hanley, and even if they did, it would completely decimate the system, keeping them from being able to make any moves for pitchers either now or the deadline

Posts: 1383 12/16/11 1:52 PM Forum Moderator	Eh, the Marlins are pretty clearly in win-now mode with their signings of Reyes and Buehrle and pursuit of Pujols. This isn't the same old Marlins we're used to. Youkilis and Ellsbury are definitely players they'd be interested in, especially since they'd both be under control for two more years and the Marlins have conspicuous holes at 3B and CF. That said, the Marlins are probably not going to sell-low on Hanley unless they get bowled over by great offer, and I'm not sure there's room for a deal that both sides would accept.

He's been declining offensively and worse he's becoming an inadequate SS probably near where Garciaparra was defensively around 2003. And what happens when the Sox give up the farm for him? He hits decently for a SS but before very long becomes a big defensive issue and then the Sox will be forced to move him off of SS. Then what happens? He pouts and behaves like his hero Manny Ramirez, who he emulated from the very brief time they were together in Boston in 2005. And then you have to deal him off then. Hope you can get the farm back for him. No thank you.

The only way he'd go is if he really doesn't want to play third base or outfield and they can trade him for another star-level talent at one of those positions. Miami wants him to draw the south Miami Cuban community into their new south Miami ballpark. Other RS names, Cubans, Juan Carlos Linares, Adalberto Ibarra, and Josh Reddick. Thats this week-end rumor, who knows next week.

SS isn't the top need for the Sox, they don't have a very cost controlled superstar, and don't have the high end prospects. I'd love Hanley on the Sox, but I'd much rather see a quality SP get dealt to Boston. I have no issue with Scutaro starting the bulk of the games on the left side this season. His 4 best seasons in the majors are the past 4. I'm not sure why so many people are so down on him

Now, if you tell me Hanley has expressed an interest in playing Right Field, I may listen. But again, who plays 3rd? I think if Youk goes at all (and I don't think he does) he goes to the Cubs to play 1st base in a package for Garza, and that's only if they miss out on Prince.
