Hey, everyone's still impressed with the Bobby Jenks and Andrew Miller signings, right? The Red Sox could sign Broxton for a dollar and I guarantee that half of this board would still be demanding his immediate release after five outings. Not all 29 GMs have the mix of payroll limitations, extreme bullpen needs and win-now situation we do. If we sign anyone with a lower upside than Broxton for around the same money, yes, it is a terrible job. Even if Broxton sucks. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Miller signing (Bobby Jenks is a bit overpaid), the wrong comes in actually giving him innings after he showed he couldn't get the job done. And Broxton is not, by any means, as big as gamble as Miller was, considering his role, and past performance.

Posts: 1339 11/29/11 10:32 PM Forum Moderator	This team does not need high risk (given the $4m salary), high upside relievers. We have two of those already in Jenks and Morales. It needs one steady high-leverage guy (to either close or set up, depending on what you do with Bard) and some spaghetti that can turn into solid 6th/7th inning guys. There is some MiL depth but some players may be needed as starting depth (Doubront, Weiland) and the rest are fringy (Atchinson, Bowden, Cabral) or need more development (Wilson, Fields).

I've no idea if it is a good trade, but Chatwood was a top 100 prospect and made the majors as a 21 year old with a FB that averaged 93 and greater than 10 mph separation with his change. He didn't have a good year, but Chatwood is not "one of the worst pitchers in baseball." That's pretty extreme what-have-you-done-for-me-lately-itis.

Also, as has been previously stated, Chatwood has more value than you are giving him credit for. That being said, I do think it is surprising that they would trade even an average major leaguer straight up for a kid who is essentially still a prospect, and has been struggling recently.

Even if you ignore his position, and factor in his park, he's an above-average hitter: a career 101 wRC+. Let's pretend he's entirely a product of Coors and throw out his home stats. His career road line is actually .208/.338/.369/.707. Over his 6-year career, he is one of 43 catchers with 500+ road PA's. Among that group, he ranks 19th in wOBA. So he's an above-average catcher on the road. For context, the players closest to him in road wOBA are Ryan Doumit, David Ross, Yadier Molina, John Buck. ADD: Don, out of the 8th spot in the lineup, he's actually hit a bit worse (.783 OPS vs .792 OPS elsewhere), despite a higher BABIP there (.279 BABIP vs .266 elsewhere). Rookie Posts: 20 12/01/11 8:37 AM	Ianetta should be a major league starting catcher. He probably isn't going to be great, but he should be getting regular playing time. Chatwood is a guy who has an interesting arm but no real great success at any level. Beyond low A, he's never really missed many bats, posting very pedestrian K rates from AA through the majors while walking a ton of batters. I don’t see how anyone could not love this trade for LAoA. I don't see them giving Madson 4 years if that's what it takes. So that leaves dealing talent for Bailey or Street, signing Cordero whose Ks are down, but would probably only require 2 years, getting K-Rod who has had some serious personal issues in the past or simply making Bard the closer which would force the Sox to acquire two starters, not too mention get a setup man like Rauch or Lidge for the closer and maybe get a lefty like Affeldt or Thornton in a deal.

Who knows, Madsen might find his market drying up and take something like 3/$30m. Some of the lower tier closers will certainly have to take cheap one-year deals. Teams without a clear closer opening who might spend on the position: Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mets, Reds Teams without a clear closer who probably won't spend on the position: Twins, Astros, Padres Teams who might have a closer opening: Angels (Walden), Orioles (J. Johnson) Free agent closers remaining: Madsen, F. Rodriguez, Cordero, Capps, Rauch, Francisco, Light, Saito

Because of the contracts Bell/Paps signed with their teams, we will be forced to overpay for a closer in years and money. Bard is going to become our closer anyway, if not this year in a year or two
