Getting rid of Soriano is mainly wanting to get rid of his salary I would imagine. Not sure it would work, but certainly an interesting thought.

Veteran Member Posts: 516 11/30/11 4:49 PM	I think Soriano hitting wise would be fine. Its his defense that wouldn't. Not sure, Yirmiyahu, where he could play. I wish Crawford could play right. He could cover the ground, but his arm doesn't play. Soriano conjures up Manny somewhat for me in left. It would not be quite as entertaining.

I was thinking RF platoon, plus some time at DH. Honestly, I had mistakenly thought he'd been playing RF for the Cubs. If he can't play RF, it's not worth discussing.

He was so bad; the breakingball down and away was something he could neither hit nor lay off of. I'm convinced that is why the Yankees traded a 27 year old who had just had back to back seasons of 38 and 39 HRs.

They traded him for a 28-year-old coming off six straight 40+ homer seasons (that played short!), not because he looked bad in the ALCS.

Am I crazy for even thinking about this? Yes. Soriano is going to be 36 yrs old and has not had an OBP of .350 in his entire time with the Cubs. He posted a 104 OPS+ last year and his overall career trends do not look good, and this is without even bothering to talk about his fielding. I don't see the Sox taking on another $17 - $20 million player this offseason, especially given their need to acquire at least two starters and probably two relievers (if Bard starts, then we're talking one starter and three relievers including a closer). I doubt the Sox are going to be big spenders this offseason. I think the Sox will spend most of their remaining $ on pitching and a RH hitting OF.

Posts: 1346 12/02/11 6:40 PM Forum Moderator	I think we could swing Frank Francisco for cheap. He's had terrific peripherals the last three years, albeit with injury issues. Zumaya is coming off a very serious injury but he has pitched tremendously in the past. Takashi Saito is another free agent who, despite being 41, continues to pitch well (despite a sharp decline in his K rate in 2011).

I know they don't have the money but I would love to see it.~~ Ignore all that as it appears there are bigger offers out there, however my second point still stands. On another note about the Red Sox not having any money. I think there should be an option where a player in Lackey's case does not count against the luxury tax. The sox already have ellsbury and crawford in the lineup, how many leadoff hitters can one lineup support? Personally I think it'd be fun to watch Reyes in Miami leading off for Hanley, Stanton and LoMo.
