Posts: 10279 11/16/11 11:04 AM Mike Andrews Editor-in-Chief SoxProspects.com	Tags : None Look for Boston to make three or four roster moves on Friday to protect players from selection by other teams in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft. Eligible players must be added to their teams’ respective 40-man rosters by close-of-business on Nov. 18 in order to be protected from selection in the Rule 5 Draft, which is scheduled to take place on Dec. 8, the final day of the winter meetings. The following players in the Red Sox system will be eligible to be selected if they are not added to the 40-man roster by close-of-business on Friday: Michael Almanzar, Anatanaer Batista, Ronald Bermudez, Drake Britton, Cesar Cabral, Yeiper Castillo, Miguel Celestino, Caleb Clay, Mitch Dening, Ryan Dent,Brandon Duckworth, Justin Erasmus, Ruben Flores, Joantoni Garcia, Seth Garrison, Zach Gentile, Miguel Gonzalez, Charlie Haeger, Jon Hee, Mitch Herold, Jennel Hudson, Brock Huntzinger, Jeremy Kehrt, Matt Kramer, Will Latimer, Michael Lee, Che-Hsuan Lin, David Mailman, Leandro Marin, Will Middlebrooks, Daniel Nava, Dennis Neuman, Michael Olmsted, Josue Peley, Tony Pena, Wilfred Pichardo, Eammon Portice, Ryan Pressly, Roberto Ramos, Manny Rivera, Reynaldo Rodriguez, Charle Rosario, Pete Ruiz, Nate Spears, Matt Spring, and Tony Thomas. Aside from Middlebrooks and Britton there isn't a guy there outside of Cabral that could really be considered a possible fit in the MLB. Lin just doesn't strike me as beating out Kalish, Reddick and to a future extent Brentz. I've been a big fan of Reynaldo Rodriguez of course but he is starting to need to make his push to earning even a shot at a back up spot.

The club still needs to add about 3-5 mlb pitchers, an OF, a DH, and a backup catcher. That puts the 40-man number around 42 if you assume 4 pitchers. Non-tender/outright candidates include Michael Bowden, Scott Atchison, Darnell McDonald, Luis Exposito, Matt Albers, Rich Hill, and Andrew Miller.

If Adam Stern could stick, Che-Hsuan Lin can. Even if he's never going to start for the Red Sox, which I believe to be the case, you could at least get something better than $50,000 for him in a trade at the deadline or something. I think there's a chance ReyRod gets picked. However, he strikes me as another Jorge Jimenez who'd get picked, perhaps even nearly make the team, but will never stick in the majors over a full season. Does he really hit enough as a first baseman? Crazy thought that I don't think will happen: might someone take a flier on Portice and his funky delivery? I see four guys getting added (Middlebrooks, Britton, Lin, Cabral) and four getting non-tendered (Atchison, McDonald, Hill, Miller). As far as the holes on the MLB roster, I figure at least one spot will be taken up by a prospect (Kalish, Reddick, Lavarnway). I also figure 2 of the bullpen spots won't affect the 40-man count, as they will come from prospects already on the 40-man (Bowden, Doubront, Weiland) or from a guy on a minor league contract (like Reyes last year). Not 100% on Cabral, especially since we don't know what the bid/ask on the Theo compensation will look like. Don't see anyone else protected. I could definitely see Hill and Miller being non-tendered and Expo being outrighted. Not sure we will see Bowden, Atchison or McDonald non-tendered before ST. I don't see Albers going anywhere before ST; we will need to see in what kind of shape he shows up.

All three are still technically under the control of the organization as of the last time I got official word -- they're just on long-term inactive lists. I'm not really sure how that works, however, as I my understanding is that players are only allowed to be listed on the Restricted or Voluntarily Retired Lists for two years. Anyway, all three will also technically be Rule 5 eligible this off-season.

Good point on Bowden/Atchison/McDonald. The 40-man roster this year might be flexible enough to allow them to just stick around in spring training as injury insurance to the guys ahead of them on the depth chart.

Rookie Posts: 45 11/16/11 12:55 PM	I would have to go with everyone else on this and add Middlebrooks, Britton, Lin, and Cabral. Middlebrooks: Duh, no need to explain why. Britton: There is no way that a big lefty with type of stuff would not get picked up by some team with no aspirations for this year. He would be god-awful in the Majors, but he could be a prime prospect of being stashed on a rosters 60 day DL for most of the season. Cabral: Got selected last season, almost broke camp with a talented Rays team, after a pretty solid season last year is there any reson to doubt he would not be selected again? Lin: Some NL team would take him without thinking twice. He certainly could be a passable 4th outfielder for several teams NL with huge ballpark dimensions. This would leave Celestino, Rivera, Nava, and ReyRod unprotected. Of those 4, losing either Celestino or Rivera would be disappointing as each as shown some limited promise in the low levels of the minors. And tough from a sentimental pov losing either Nava or Rey Rod would be a shame because they are cool stories, the fact is that neither really has much of a future. Sure Nava could be a fifth outfielder and Rey Rod a backup utility infielder, but neither will ever be valued highly enough to get any thing in return.

I agree about Britton and maybe Lin, but only Middlebrooks is a no-brainer. It would be nice to get back to picking between some real diamonds instead of some "cut glass". Sorry that is one under-whelming list!!

A number of players that would have been on this list were added to the 40-man roster before having to get to this point (Weiland, Lavarnway). The majority of the MLB ready guys the sox had in the system were needed due to injuries and such in the last half of last season, resulting in not many MLB ready guys needing protection from the Rule V draft. Very few of the guys in the list above stand a chance to be added to an MLB roster for the next season so it's not much to worry about.

One of the benefits is that, ideally, your prospects get added to the 40-man because they're actually MLB-ready, rather than simply because your hand is forced by the Rule 5 draft.

This is why the Rule 5 draft never really blows away the common fan, because it is often filled with players who project as Four-A type players or bench players. Middlebrooks and Britton both will be protected because they have significant upside, even if Britton carries far more risk. Lin is a good bet to stick as well because he has plus tools and is close to the majors, something rival organizations value (hell, he could probably start for the Astros next year). With the last guys the organization often takes a few risks on guys they think can sneak through, such as Daniel Nava, and stashes guys they think would get selected, which is part of the reason protecting Cabral would make sense. The candidates for non-tender all seem valid, and will likely depend on what areas the Red Sox address through free agency. Outfield, middle infielder/utility players, and solid organizational RP depth gives the big league club a lot of flexibility this off-season.

Posts: 1322 11/16/11 5:16 PM Forum Moderator	I suspect that the Red Sox may decide to trade their spare part-type players in the offseason, either now (in preparation for FA signings) or as needed for pending FA signings. Lars Anderson, Luis Exposito, and Oscar Tejada, for instance, have no foreseeable role for the big league club in 2012 unless multiple injuries occur at their positions. Maybe Expo gets through waivers, but Anderson and Tejada probably wouldn't. As it stands, they're all around third or fourth down on the depth chart, especially if you think the team will sign a versatile FA or two to fill the back of the bench/be the first guys up at AAA. You'd probably be selling low if you were to trade them and optimally they'd be throw-ins in a larger deal since they wouldn't get much of a return if they were traded on their own, but to me these guys are dead weight and will have to be traded/released sooner or later, and I'd rather it be sooner rather than later to allow you to do things like protect Cabral/Lin from Rule 5 and maybe hold a guy like Hill until you can put him back on the 60-day DL (I'm paranoid that another team will jump in and offer him a ML deal if we non-tender him) or see whether someone in the Bowden/Atchinson/McDonald/Miller pool of mediocrity might be able to take a step forward in Spring Training.

He isn't exactly that kind of player, since he's been selected in Rule 5 before and nearly stuck, but I'll downgrade him on my part from "certain" to "likely," with the other three being "certain" in my mind. By the way, minor pet peeve: It's Rule "5," not "V." The MLB agreement doesn't use roman numerals, so I'm not sure why everyone always does. I don't think he could stick on a major league roster, but he's someone another organization could take a flier on especially with the minimal cost and risk involved.

I ask because my understanding of it has been more like this description, from a story today by Jenifer Langosch: Players become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after being in an organization for four years (if they signed at age 19 or older) or five years (if they signed at age 18 or younger). (Emphasis mine.) In other words, players like Spears, Duckworth, Haeger etc. who were released from teams and allowed to make their own way as free agents wouldn't become eligible for the Rule 5 draft just because they signed minor league contracts before the draft deadline. It would make sense to me that a traded prospect would carry his eventual eligibility with him--his change in organization wasn't by choice--but it makes no sense at all to me to have this apply to free agents.
