Pitchers are volatile and injury-prone. If given the choice, it's best to avoid long-term committments to pitchers.

My previous statement I was taking for granted Ortiz would be back. I certainly agree if we stick with the platoon in RF you need to bring Ortiz back. And with his production the last two years I would be willing to do 2-3 years with an option. Just what I would feel comfortable with. I would also have a small team buyout option. He was in terrific shape '11. If he can maintain it, great. If he can't I'd trigger the buyout. I think they will go cheap in RF. I wonder if Reddick is on the team though? Maybe a Kalish/rhh platoon out there.

I saw he's 23, supposedly hit 98 with an array of off-speed pitches (not sure how good they are) and considered more of a bullpen arm. I'm guessing he may need a half or full year in the minors but wasn't sure if anyone had a little more insight on him?

Source: #RedSox have made David Ortiz an offer I'm sticking to my original prediction: I think a deal that could work for both sides would be a 1 year deal with a team/player/buyout option. Maybe something like 1 year 12M, with a mutual option for 12M, player option for 8M, buyout of 1M. If he plays great in 2012, he gets 2/24. If he plays okay, he gets 2/20. If he sucks, he gets 1/13 (same as arbitration). I just don't think Papi will settle for 1 year and it makes no sense for the Sox to guarantee 2 years...just a thought. The Red Sox initial offer should be really interesting because there is pretty much no way that they guarantee 2 years right off the bat and zero chance that they can offer less than 12M for a 1 year deal (because otherwise he would just accept arbitration). Its also interesting that Papi's agent immediately met with another team after the Sox' initial offer.
