He's not a great option, but at the right price bring him into the bullpen fold. As far as Pap he did a great job for us. He also isn't worth his new contract. As far as Bard he had a tired arm the past two months. He was over used as most of us noticed. Bard's closer mentality worries me. How will he handle 2 blown saves in a roll? Jenks was a bad signing last year. His stuff was bad two years before we signed him. I'm more concerned about our starting pitching.

I can't remember disliking a productive Red Sox player more than I disliked Papelbon. This is absolutely the way to operate with this free agent reliever market, there will be serious value to those who wait.

I also recall that K-Rod seemed more interested in hitting on 16 year old girls during games while in the bullpen when the Angels came to Fenway. Veteran Member Posts: 183 11/12/11 3:06 PM	Looking at the host of established relievers now in free agency, the only ones that are in my opinion and on historical performance particularly effective, not in the 33-36 age range or not coming off injury appear to be Papelbon and Madson. Papelbon is now unavailable. A lot of the rest are of the Bobby Jenks physique (rotundus Americanus) that the new administration, given its focus on conditioning, will likely be averse to. For us I think we have to hope that Jenks gets in shape and recovers from his physical troubles or we overpay for Madson given the lack of available market options and the likely competition. Otherwise we have to look within or make a trade for some hard throwing stud in the high minors. Having seen Alex Wilson pitch for parts of 2 years, I am not overly impressed with the results. I think Weiland has better stuff. Mr. Bard could be Obi-Wan Kenobi...'our only hope'.

Veteran Member Posts: 146 11/12/11 8:44 PM	So, when it comes down to it, the Sox couldn't afford to sign Papelbon this early in the offseason due to much more pressing needs in other areas that may also be costly. Although I really wanted the Sox to pay up to keep Pap, I guess Ben's thought process was that the Sox can't use a great closer in Papelbon unless they get already got solid 7 innings from the SPs first. The Sox need to figure out how to acquire 2 SPs before they can drop $ at the Closer position. From my calcs, the Sox have about 25-30M to spend this offseason without going over the luxury tax. Signing Pap right off the bat would have left the Sox with about 15M to get 2 SPs and a DH/RF...Just thought I'd explain my reasoning to the no contract offer in case people see it a different way.

You can do all the mental gymnastics about salary caps all you want - it boils down to the fact that this is a ridiculous contract for a closer - esp. one with Paps history.
