Yes we will have to give up our first which would be an technically we will be moving down the first in this case not so sexy no. But we do save money get a CL many have said is the best CL out there an the savest bet to live up to his 4 yr contract in Madsen. Plus we get a extra 1st rd pick. Or we kept Pap spent more money an have 1 first instead of 2. I could be happy with this but I prefer we try an first acquire a Jonny Venters or some one like that to compete with bard save money an draft picks an possibly a deal for a jonny venters would cost us to much. Josh Reddick? I no I would make that deal because I believe in Venters as a true shut down CL an view Reddick as a borderline starter with 20 HR power but an inablilty to be consistent anuff at the plate to be a trusted full time starter.

Other option would be to sign two guys for the same price and give up no pick. I might like that better. Also, let Wheeler walk and take the pick. Two guys from this list: Broxton (1-year deal only), Mike Gonzalez, Frank Francisco, Joel Peralta, Francisco Rodriguez, George Sherrill, Jose Valverde. I hate spending lots of money on the bullpen because any year you can have someone put up a 2.00 ERA and it isn't that shocking. If Tazawa is up at some point and proves to be reliable would it be shocking? If Cesar Cabral is up by the end of the year and proves good would it be that surprising? If Jenks returns to sub-3 FIP territory I'd not be that surprised. I guess I wouldn't count on any of that happening, but I wouldn't count on any single reliever unless his name rhymed with Mariano Rivera. Postponed: Wind

And I'm not sure that I agree with the top 15 talent assessment. Last year's 1st Round showed a lot of teams willing and ready to throw money at high talent picks. Add to this one more organization that will concentrate on the draft (Cubs), as well as the specter of a hard-slot system, and I don't think those top talent guys are going to fall to Boston like they may have in years past.

Now if they can just stay away from Madson and Bell (unless their markets totally collapse) and give an low base, high incentives deal to one or two bounce-back candidates (Nathan, Broxton, Francisco, Lidge, whoever really) to "challenge" Bard for the closer's role, then we might actually have a bullpen. Screw the troops. Or at the very least, buy them a drink.

Based on expectations of cost and other available options 2. Sox have told Aceves to come to ST ready to start 3. Papelbon and agents didn't give Sox a chance to match the Philly deal

This is what I'm hoping for too. Some games count more than others and recently I didn't trust Paps against certain teams. I honestly can see this team getting better by losing Paps and replacing him with two or more of the names above or similar.

Maybe there is a starter out there who's stuff will play up in short stints in the pen. TB flipped their whole pen last off season so im guessing we can at least add a quality arm. Please dont sign Bell or Madson for a multi year deal and give our first up.

Posts: 3636 11/11/11 7:40 PM Forum Moderator	After Cherington's comments (no formal offer to Papelbon, long-term deals for closers are a bad idea, having a spring training competition for closer), I'd be shocked if we signed Bell or Madson. Among the spaghetti, I think we should grab Mike Gonzalez. I think its good to have a lefty who is more than just a LOOGY or a mop-up guy. His price should be reasonable. He doesn't have the horrific closer label, and his ERA has been unluckily high the last 2 years, despite solid peripherals. He can be a part of the spring training 'competition' that Bard will win.

Jenks will be taking medicine for the embolism leading up to his schedule surgery date in early December.
