Nick (Mass): Xander Bogaerts is getting a ton of hype lately. Are you buying into it and is he a SS longterm? Jim Callis: Yes. Ran him up my Red Sox Top 30 in the offseason and he's doing a nice job for an 18-year-old in low Class A. He has one of the best bats in the Boston system. He will outgrow shortstop, however, and probably wind up at third base.

Expect his production to fluctuate and for there to be bouts of inconsistency the rest of the season, but his ceiling is amongst the highest of any prospect within the Red Sox system. Bogaerts’ raw tools jump out when seeing him. Bringing the head of the bat quickly through the hitting zone via strong wrists, he produces excellent backspin when he squares balls up and is capable of driving the ball to all fields at an early age. His ability to keep his hands back before attacking the ball has impressed thus far during his time in Greenville. A lean body type, Bogaerts has a lot of room on his frame to fill out as he matures into his 20s and projects to have plus power as he continues to learn to tap into his natural strength.

(Even if he is is a bad defender) Does this kids glove have enough potential to stick there if he doesn't "outgrow" the position.

Soxprospects still lists Hanley as 6'1", 175 which must have been what he was either when signed or when traded. If Xavier is 6'3" at 18 he could wind up 6'3" or 6'5"; even at 6'3" it's very hard to play SS. A-Rod is listed as 6'3" 225 now, and should have stayed at SS when he signed with NY.

Yankees really sucked with Jeter at SS and A-Rod on 3rd.

Just a freakish collection of young slugging hitters at the same time, or some other factor in play?adding: just watched the video in the link LCBF posted above ... X does something I can't remember seeing before in his swing: his front foot actually goes backwards a few inches in his stride. He starts really spread out, and then pulls his front foot back a few inches into hitting position. It's an interesting approach, seems like it'd help him stay balanced and on the ball longer. Is this more common than I know, and I just haven't noticed it before?
