Theoretically (but not realistically) a player could put together a 55 (or 56) game hit-streak with a bunch of 1 for 4 or 5 performances. Joe D's streak is an incredible achievement and will probably never be touched, but Williams '41 season was easily more productive and valuable.

Veteran Member Posts: 204 07/24/11 8:49 PM	Wakefield is a replacement. He's essentially the seventh starter on this team. Optimally he wouldn't have made a start this year. Things have been far from optimal, so he's had to pick up some of the slack. The fact that we can reach seven deep and still pull out a starter with an ERA of ~5 is a good thing. I understand and agree with some of the ire that someone like Lackey gets (prior to his recent hot streak of sorts), given what he's paid and what he's expected to do for this team. For Wakefield, on a year-to-year contract and as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency starter, I can't be mad.

My point is that you have no basis to throw him under a bus. He's an end-of-career pitcher asked to fill a limited role which has probably turned out to be somewhat more of a role than the team expected of him because of the injury bug. He's filled it about in the way that one might expect. He hasn't been great by any means (except in scattered instances), but he hasn't been a disaster. And he's doing it on the cheap, which is apparently no small matter for an organization that, while they may have lots more money to spend, seems loathe to exceed the luxury tax cap. I don't know where you come off going on some moral tangent. This is totally an issue of cost/benefit. He's a journeyman player doing a journeyman's job for a journeyman's salary. His role is appropriate for where he is in his career, he's performing it in an acceptable manner The organization seems to appreciate Wake for the service he is providing, not out of payback gratitude, but because they simply need someone to fill the role -- NOW. And it isn't really clear at this point that they have options that are guaranteed to be better than Wake. What did Weiland do when he was called up? Is Doubront really ready for a major league starter's role today? He might pitch to better stats than Wake, but would he be coming out in the 5th and 6th a lot of the time? Are we really confident about exposing Millwood's now mid-80's FB to a steady starter's role?

Veteran Member Posts: 1607 07/24/11 10:59 PM	Sounds like they're going to keep Weiland on the roster, at least for a game or two. I'm not sure I like this move for a bunch of reasons. First, didn't they find out last year that they'd really prefer to get guys used to relieving in AAA, rather than MLB? Does Weiland's experience in college negate that? Second, isn't Atchison a very good reliever and still in AAA? Plus, doesn't Weiland need to get innings this year? Lastly, I really don't love the idea of a three man bench. Its Thurday[sic]! After Thursday is Friday! And after Friday is Saturday, and Sunday is afterwards! Fun fun fun! -joshv02

Posts: 970 07/24/11 11:22 PM Forum Moderator	I wouldn't call Atchinson "very good." I think there might be another shoe to drop, especially since the bullpen is generally well rested (including two guys capable of going multiple innings (Albers, Wheeler)).

True, but he's still pretty awful. It's mind boggling that the Red Sox are 1.5 games back of Philly for the best record in major league baseball when Andrew Miller, Tim Wakefield, and John Lackey are filling out your rotation. At some point, pitching is going to have to win games and most of us aren't comfortable with the present options. Damn we need Lester and Buchholz to come back strong.

Why in the world would you treat a 44-year-old end of the rotation pitcher just like "any other"? Why would you treat ANY pitcher just like any other? Eevery pitcher is different, they tire at different points in the game, every game, and pitch counts are better or worse indicators of their likely performance. Wake has generally struggled after 80-85 pitches this year. Sure, send him out for the 7th if you want, get a few more outs from him if you can. But be prepared for him to be out of gas, and when he shows you he's done, pat him on the butt, thank him for a quality start, and get Aceves (or whoever) in there before they put 4 runs on the board. The objective is to win the ballgame, not hit a 100-pitch minimum. "I just really enjoy reading, man. It's totally a good way to stay centered." - Lars

Just a guess, but I think they might only have Weiland around in case Lester goes short tonight in his first game back. He may only have 70-75 pitches, and if he's the "wild Lester" we've seen a few games this year, he could burn through that in three or four innings. So having Weiland around to throw 3 innings would be very helpful. edit to add: Especially since Aceves went a couple innings yesterday and isn't available to throw multiple innings today ...
