Relative to their times, it has to be hands down Hornsby.

The best I ever saw was Morgan, he was five tools good and on top of that, he did something to impact the game every day in a similar way that Pedroia does that.

I don't disagree with DCRi's assessment that Alomar was a better defender than Morgan but definitely disagree that Morgan was solid average at best. Plus defender, easy, borderline plus plus. Alomar plus plus.

Utley probably has been the best overall in recent times. Petey and Cano haven't been around long enough.

I don't remember his first name but there was a Fernandez that played for the Blue Jays that used to blow me away defensively. If I recall, he had a lot of speed but no bat. I don't think he played very long. He was entertaining though.

Two Bobby's, Doerr and Richardson also had more than decent careers as 2Bmen and should be mentioned.

Yeah you're right about Fernandez. Doerr is in the Hall and made several all star games so was probably the best 2B at the time. Richardson, I just remember seeing a lot of when I was young and he was always steady in the field and generally a pest for the Sox to deal with. The Sox usually had crappy 2Bman at the time so the contrast was glaring. Pumpsie Green (SS/2B) or Felix Mantilla anyone ?? One year, they had a rookie, Chuck Shilling that won rookie of the year then turned to more crap. It was a worse revolving door than our recent SS turnover thing.

While I was typing this I remembered Bill Mazeroski and still remember his WS walkoff. It's still the only game 7 walkoff HR in history. If I'm remembering right, Yogi had put the Yankees ahead the half inning before with a HR. He's also another HOFer. I was young and didn't follow the Pirates so I don't have any clue about his defense.
