Aren't Downs and Balfour the only relievers that would even cost a draft pick? I'd prefer to get someone like Howell or Fuentes and then sign one of the 10 good righty relievers, such as Rauch, Guerrier, Crain, Wheeler, Uehara, Putz, Jenks, Delcarmen...jk

Still, awesome trade. I guess this puts us in "win now" mode for the next few years until some of our older starters (Beckett, Lackey, Youk) go downhill.

I guess this puts us in "win now" mode for the next few years until some of our older starters (Beckett, Lackey, Youk) go downhill. The chance that Anthony Rizzo has a career resembling Gonzalez is very slim. Rizzo's a nice prospect, with decent power, but Adrian Gonzalez is one of the five best hitters on the planet.I love prospects as much as the next guy, and I dream on them too, but only some of these guys will turn out to be MLB average players or better. For the Red Sox it's not just about having cost controlled players that are MLB average or better, but having premium players under contract.Roster spots are a kind of currency too. If I ran the Boston Red Sox, I'd trade three nickels for a dime any day of the week.

if/when the Sox give Gonzalez the extension, wouldn't this also make trading Lars a prudent decision? Or will Lars be the DH of the future

The rumors are out there that the Sox are shopping Scutaro for an RP. But yes, there are quite a few fairly decent RPs for the back of the BP out there for no cost except their contract. However, I think they should try to get at least one really good RP, a good set-up man, or someone who could close, especially since they will be replacing Paps after next season, if not sooner.

If the Sox signed another type A like Crawford then signing Soriano would only cost them a 2 rounder correct?

They would surrender their first round pick to the team who controlled the player with the higher Elias ranking. Subsequent Type-A free agents would force the Red Sox to surrender picks in later rounds. That's why I say if you are going to sign Free Agents then sign two or three. Sure, you'll surrender a second round pick for Soriano, but it also screws Tampa out of premium compensation for their player. You potentially hurt a division rival twice.

We have options to keep us under the threshold even if we extend Gonzalez now. Whatever Theo's master plan is, he isn't overly concerned about the lux tax or he would have non-tendered Papelbon.
