The lineup will still be good enough to keep the team in the race, especially when backed by this rotation and defense, and it keeps options open for picking up a bat at the deadline. If they sign Beltre, it would make it difficult to trade for a 1B or 3B at the deadline, which limits the options to an OF, and that means you have to find a landing spot for one of Cameron or Ellsbury. Without Beltre, you can realistically pick up any bat and not have to worry too much about where everyone is going to play.

If necessary, Beltre can be flipped to a 3rd team for a prospect to keep, or as part of a deal for the better bat. This is exactly why I would not support the 3 year commitment others are mentioning, because it makes it far more difficult to flip him, if necessary.

Boras is talking 5, and the only place you're seeing even as little as 3 years is just from fans talking about what they would give. The minimum amount of years you're realistically talking about on a Beltre contract is likely 4, 3 in an absolute stretch. A 1 year deal isn't even worth considering, because it's never going to happen unless some completely unforeseeable circumstance arises.

"The budget number is hard and set," Cashman said. "As we move forward, we have Jeter and Rivera coming up next year. We were very aggressive in last year's free-agent market and, it turned out, for good reason - there were terrific players available. This market's a lot different. We've got to be careful, because we have a lot of commitments we're locked in on."
Then Cashman made a telling comment that could be the backdrop for the Yankees' relatively conservative moves: "Next year's free-agent market is incredibly more impressive than this one." Head to head the Sox don't typically win out on a player in a bidding war. However, the way things are looking the Sox and Yankees could be in line for different players... was this by design with Theo? The Yankees should be looking for pitching, while the Red Sox, especially if they re-up Beckett, should be focused on bats.
