Ryota Igarashi |
Lead | ||
|
Reports out of Japan are the Sox are in the lead on Ryota Igarashi, offering a two year, $2-$M major league deal. However, there have been some recent reports
that the Mets are in the lead. Igarashi, 31, is a hard-throwing righty reliever out of Japan. He gets his FB up to 98 mph and also mixes in a forkball.
Questionable control.

Ryota Igarashi has departed to Arizona for offseason training. On his way out, he let it slip that he had received an offer from a team he wanted to play for, but didn't say which team it was. Nikkan Sports speculates that he's received at least four offers already. Nikkan Sports also says that he wants to close in MLB, which I hadn't read before. |

He won't be closing in Boston.
Also, over at SOSH a poster in Japan who seen him pitch says he's no longer hitting 98 and is mostly 92-93. He said from what he saw he'd need to really refine his splitter or else he'd get lit up in MLB.

The NBP Tracker Data from this summer had the velo of his fastball at 94-97 mph.

He looks like he sits a Dice-K-like 91-93, rather then the reported 98, if the clock in the youtube video is right. His splitter looked like a decent
out-pitch, don't know if he has another pitch or if his control is better. He looks like a 7th inning guy to me, but unless his control is better or has
another out-pitch he shouldn't be throwing any high leverage innings. He clearly doesn't have a Bard fastball and wont be blowing anyone away.

I could definitely see him as a bottom of the bullpen guy. Filling in the 6th/7th in out of hand games and by the end of the season maybe getting some
important innings.
