Keep Buch. Try hard to get Holliday and go with Kotchman at 1B. He is cheap and could have a breakout season and if nothing else is an upgrade from Lowell. We then keep all our prospects and see what our needs are at the deadline. I more or less think the Bridge year talk had more to do with our prospects that are near major league ready. We were going to still be very competitive with a chance at a championship.

The next moves should not change:
1 - With the Lackey signing, they really need to determine who is going to be the catcher. If defense behind the plate is the focus, then I think that the Sox are really going to give Wagner a equal shot to be the starting catcher. 2 - Left field/3B/1B situation: Rick Ankiel because he is a buy-low prospect with upside and provides a nice lefty/righty combo with Hermida who can play left and right field while spotting Ortiz some rest or whomever the 1B is going to be whether it is: VMart, Nick Johnson, Kotchman, etc...If a 1B or a 3B are signed (Nick Johnson or Miggy Tejada) then it is clear that VMart is the catcher (obviously). 3 - Aroldis Chapman needs to be signed and continue to bolster one of the top 3 farm systems in the bigs with the Phillies and the Rays being the other two. 4 - Begin the process to extending Beckett, VMart and Papelbon. If the Sox are going to have this type of rotation, it would be silly not to have Papelbon locked up. 2010 lineup: Ellsbury (cf) - Pedroia (2b) - VMart (c) - Youkilis (3b) - Ortiz (dh) - Drew (rf) - Johnson (1b) - Ankiel (lf) - Scutaro (ss) The only problem with this lineup is that it is left-handed heavy. |

jdb wrote: Forget that. I'd rather sign Nick Johnson and hope that between him and Lowrie you've got one healthy player. If that fails, you can acquire help at first pretty easily, especially when help at third or catcher can essentially patch up first base. Kotchman is really the one guy I don't want on the team next year.

Free agent outfielder Mike Cameron is in "serious talks" with the Red Sox, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The two sides are reportedly
discussing a two-year pact.
Rosenthal adds that it is unclear whether the BoSox would place Cameron in left field or center field. http://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/6677312207 other than that ; 1.sign Chapman 2.get Adrian Gonzalez 3. get the lowell done |

SPEND MORE MONEY!
Seriously, spend right up to the luxury tax. 1. Sign Holliday (5 year 18 per) 2. Sign Beltre/Johnson (rather have Beltre, love the D) 3. Keep prospects Bonus 4. Sign Chapman If last year the Yanks can sign Tex, CC, and Burnett, why cant we sign Holliday, Beltre, and Lackey in a weaker market without the Yanks to big against?

Cot's currently has us at $108.77 million, not counting arbitration eligibles or Lackey... I'd do the math, but I don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to estimate arbitration raises. |

in theory they could still sign Holliday ,using Ellsbury as part of the deal for Adrian Gonzalez (along with Clay) ,using hermida as a baldelli replacement and
having cameron only for 2 years on this reported deal would be right around the time Westmoreland could take over Center(projection)

Ellsbury and Buchholz for Adrian Gonzalez is a criminal over-pay. That is absolutely not happening.

Kotchman and Johnson are drastically different players. Johnson is an established OBP machine who is average defensively and has injury concerns. Kotchman is a
younger player whose best offensive season (as measured by wOBA) is below Johnson's career average. He's a superb defensive player and is durable.
There's a chance he's a late bloomer who will make improvements in his offensive ability while Johnson has probably already peaked.

I am loving the Lackey deal. Cash out, acquire top pitcher, keep prospects.
Nice play by a big market team. I was worried that we were trying to be the Oakland A's. While Moneyball made them famous, there is no getting around that they suck. Next step: a bat. Can we do it without giving up Buch? Now here is a question: would the Pads take Lars, Max Ramirez, Bowden, and Tazawa for Gonzalez? Tazawa could be very good in the National League, and Bowden would be a solid #3 starter in the NL. Lars could step in at 1st for Gonzo and Ramirez is good, cost controlled power catching. All that for little annual spend. Finally, call Boris and tell him that we will sign Holliday for 5 X 18 right now or we move on to Cameron. Take it or leave it. Then collect your draft picks and get ready for a 100 win season. |

I don't know who Boris is.
The Padres do not need Lars Anderson, they have Kyle Blanks. No, that package would not work at all. We have a forum for discussing trade proposals.

I only know what the media tells us. If Lowell needs surgery, I'd imagine the Rangers nix it. If his thumb is ok, I assume it will go through.

With Lackey in hand, I don't really see a need for any other "major" moves, when you consider the price for Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder
would be exorbitant.
LF Ellsbury (L) 2B Pedroia (R) RF Drew (L) 1B Youkilis (R) C Martinez (S) 3B Beltre (R) DH Ortiz (L) CF Cameron (R) SS Scuatro (R) B- Hermida (L) B- Huglett/Utility INF (R) B- Kotchman (L) B- Varitek (S) SP- Lester (L) SP- Lackey (R) SP- Beckett (R) SP- Buchholz (R) SP- Matsuzaka/Wakefield (R) RP- Papelbon (R) RP- Okajima (L) RP- Bard (R) RP- Ramirez (R) RP- Delcarmen (R) RP- Bonser/R.A. Ramirez RP- Acquisition (Mike Gonzalez?) That would be a very dynamic team; a possible improvement on last season's potent offense, a top-3 rotation in all of baseball, with the potential for above-average defense at every position on the diamond (excluding catcher).
