Matt Torra - SP - D'Backs system
Below, is a little work I did for a friend. Matt was unprotected by the D'Backs, and is now eligible to be selected in the Rule V. 2005 draft - 1st selection in supplementary round 1 - 31st overall Of starting pitchers with at least 120 IP in 2009, Matt gave up the fewest walks in the Southern League, and was in the top 15 of all minor leaguers with at least 120 IP. Matt led all minor leaguers in innings pitched in 2009. Matt led the Southern League in games started, complete games, and shutouts. Of pitchers with at least 120 IP, Matt was 3rd in the Southern League with a WHIP of 1.22, and in the top 15 of minor leaguers with at least 120 IP. 5.2 innings pitched per start in 2007 5.2 innings pitched per start in 2008 6.1 innings pitched per start in 2009 In addition to his BB, ERA, and WHIP trending down over the past three years, his innings pitched, HR/FB, and GB% have been consistently at the top of his league. Four quality pitches - Matt throws a curve ball, change up, and four-seamer, that all compliment his primary pitch, a darting two-seamer. Durability- Matt has pitched 496 innings over the past three seasons, tops among minor league pitchers. Matt has a strong build at 6'3 230 pounds. Consistency- Matt's performance over the past three years has been remarkably consistent, and shows a positive trend in major pitching statistics. Value - Matt offers tremendous value and upside. He WILL fit right into the mid-back end of a Major League rotation. Matt has the ability to pitch deep into games, saving bullpen arms that are seemingly overused when many 3rd, 4th, and 5th starters pitch. A tremendous ground ball and strike out percentage ratio, relative to fly balls and line drives will only increase his value with a major league defense behind him, and his continual ability to keep the ball off the sweet spot and in the park. Again, just a bit of information I compiled for a friend. I think that Torra will be a name that may not get some buzz around the Rule V time, but probably should. I think he would be able to help a big league club next year, with his ability to go deep into games, as seen over the past few years of his minor league career. |

Sibby Sisti wrote: You caught me. Truth be told, I am doing some freelance work for his management group, and at DiaMMond Managemet, we'd love to see him picked up. If I can't prove that he is the best pitcher in the minor leagues (or at least try), I'm not doing my job. The Boras technique is something that some firms preach. You make the claims that your guy is the best, or you aren't doing your client a service, because someone else will try to prove he is. |

I remember before Torra was drafted by the D-Backs he was quickly moving up draft boards. Local guy that I would love to see do well.

After pitching 10 innings, and 10 2/3 innings in back to back STARTS, even Matt himself admitted he was overthrown a bit his last year at UMass. Knock on wood, he didn't have a signle setback, came back from the surgery ahead of schedule, and hasn't seen the DL since. With the recent move the Diamondbacks just made, it looks like Matt can expect another year in the minors, unless Ian Kennedy's arm falls off. |

Who are the season-long injury candidates likely to be targeted by the Sox ala Miguel Gonzalez (2008)?
The roster exploitation was certainly advantageous come playoff time, and we ended up keeping Miggy for 2009 (he's even got a little upside!). |

Theo basically said today that the Sox don't expect to make a selection. He also said that they could lose a couple players, but he doesn't think those players would stick. "Yeah, I think we might, there are a couple guys -- but if we were to lose guys, we have an expectation we could get them back, that's why we didn't protect them," he said. |

Didn't he say he didn't expect them to make a pick last year as well?

I wonder how much impact McLoud's exit has on any selection we may or may not take. It'll be interesting to see if San Diego takes anybody

I don't think that McLeod would have been involved in the Rule 5 as the head of amateur scoutng. It's not an amateur draft.

I think Lentz is a strong possibility to get taken today. I'd give him to shot to come into ST and throw with a major league team. He's got a live
arm and rounded back into form after getting past his injury issues this season. The question would be when teams got a chance to evaluate him since he looked
very bad prior to being shutdown the second time and sent to Lowell to rehab in July. He may slip through because of that, but his fastball was looking good
when he came back in August. I like him as a sleeper/bounce back type for getting into the mix in 2010.

Agreed Cem. Lentz, Rice, and Daeges all seem like possibilities where someone might take a shot of seeing how they look in spring training.

Sox have 32 players on the 40 man and we pass????
Either Theo is gonna add a ton of FAs (Bay returning???) or the players available really sucked (in Theo's mind). Surprising. |
