WillyCoPapi3 wrote:Understood, the question is if you're going to talk about giving up quality prospects for a fifth starter (CC, Burnett, Pettite, Joba as the 1-4) who could very easily only give you league average numbers.....how valuable is that really? If Jackson isn't the guy he was for the Tigers in the first half last year, I don't see the value in trading for him rather than simply buying a better pitcher on the free agent market. If he's the guy he was in '07, '08 and the second half of '09, you could probably find someone better on the FA market. But again, there's always the chance that the yankees see something and can help Jackson transition, a la Joel Piniero this year.
I get what you're saying with the Jackson-Hermida comparison, but here's the difference: Jackson fills a definite need for the Yankees, while Hermida doesn't - and more than likely won't - for the Red Sox. While I agree that Jackson is really just an average AL starter, that is still clearly better than anything the Yanks had at their back of the rotation last season (which really was the only major hole for the team). Hermida is (still) a big talent, but it's very unlikely he'd be an upgrade over Bay this season, or that he'll go into this season as more than the team's 4th OFer. And needless to say, 4th OFers are pretty much never as valuable as starting pitchers.
Again, I get what you're saying with the comparison, but I don't think the two players are comparable when looking at the context of each of their respective situations.

Jackson had a 3.62 ERA/4.28 FIP last year at age 25.
On what team would that level of pitching equate to a "mediocre 5th starter." Lulz. |

The Tigers are very smart for selling high on Jackson. This is a move which, if it never happened, we would look back two or three years from now and ask how
the Tigers didn't know to sell high on Edwin Jackson.
Though I have a very high opinion of Granderson, I can see the logic in receiving a huge return on a player who can be shut down by the opposing team by a mere call to the pen. |

templeUsox wrote:Completely agree. Looking at Jackson's career, I think it is extremely likely he will be a 4/5 starter going forward. As for Granderson, all-in, he's a heck of a player. He's a great addition to the Yankees because he's a very good defender in center, (my opinion, haven't checked the stats) and at the end of the day, he's a good hitter. Yeah, he has about the worst platoon split I've ever seen, and that will certainly hurt him when he's loogy'ed in high leverage situations, but they have a lot of parts and he's not going to be the focus of their offense. He's the kind of guy you don't want on your team (because he'll drive you crazy) but you don't want him on the other team either (because he's very good). Hopefully the Yankees are giving up an arm (Hughes) and a leg (Montero).

New Edes article up on
espnboston with some good stuff regarding Kelly, the press room crasher, and some scuttle including:
A National League talent evaluator with strong ties to the Padres said he doubted that San Diego would move Gonzalez, but if the Padres did trade him, he could see Jed Hoyer dealing with the Red Sox, because of his knowledge of the Sox system. Still, he imagined that before unloading Gonzalez, Hoyer would want to watch Padres first-base prospect Kyle Blanks, who hit 10 home runs in 54 games before a foot injury cut short his rookie season. And from WEEI.com: New San Diego Padres GM Jed Hoyer says that it makes no sense to deal Gonzalez now. Gonzalez will make $4.75 million in 2010 and a club option for $5.5 million in 2011. Hoyer does however admit that it will be difficult to hold onto him long-term. Nobody sees it coming Theo, sweep the leg and bring him home..... EDIT: A good interview with Hoyer at the Meetings where he touches on Gonzalez, Bell, etc. It will be interesting to see where Hoyer gets starting pitching to fill out the rotation, and also where Blanks plays unless they trade a corner IF/OF (he was "rough" in RF in a small sample last year).

also from that article:
he Red Sox were monitoring Braves reliever Rafael Soriano to see whether he accepted salary arbitration by the midnight deadline. Either way, Soriano would cost the Red Sox a first-round draft pick, which would suggest they'd seek less costly alternatives to bolster their bullpen. Not even a mention that it would essentially be a 2nd round pick?

Also a bag of hockey pucks, don't forget the hockey pucks. Austin Jackson has potential but he hasn't started showing any power yet. That deal sounds
too strange to happen. The Diamondback have to be really sold on Edwin Jackson and he isn't anywhere near that good. Dumb proposal.
