To be honest, the difference maker in the game tonight was the Saints' defense. I fully expected the Pats to put up 40+ points tonight and the Saints
looked awesome, on both sides of the ball.
What gets me the most about this Patriots defense is that they can't hold teams to field goals. Bellichek defenses always bend, but they are usually great in the red zone. This defense can't stop anyone though, especially on the road. They would have beaten Indy if they managed to hold them to a field goal once. |

This defense hasnt been very good for three years now. To me it doesnt look like they're put in the best possible spot to stop the offense when they need
to. The schemes are very vanilla, they never make good adjustments. I havent seen this defense consistently lay the lumber on opposing players like they used
to under Crennel. This defense has No swagger what so ever, and in my opinion that falls all on the defensive coordinators lap. They really need to get RAC
back in here or find someone else who can come up with better schemes and coach better the defensive players better. The lack of a pass rush is also completely
killing this defense.

I feel as if the reason why we had such a weak pass rush was because of how quickly the Saints receivers got open and Brees got rid of the ball to them. Our
defensive backs looked like shit (Wilhite was out matched from the first play from scrimmage), and I have never seen a Bill Belichick defense have such a
mental break down as they did with that long pass down the middle. The Patriots just really got beat in all three phases of the game: offense, defense, special
teams. Slater took some pretty big hits on the kick returns.
In all reality, I haven't seen Brady have that much pressure on him and have to move around the pocket that much since we played the Giants in the Super Bowl. It was an unfortunate loss especially since everyone thought it would be a high scoring fight to the finish. It is also upsetting because it shows that we can't beat a good team on the road, yet. |

How injured are we really? I don't ever remember 18 players being hurt at one time before, but I didn't follow the practice reports closely before
this year. Is this abnormal? I assume that one reason we have absorbed these minor injuries more easily, is that they aren't all at one position, and we
haven't had to place too many on IR. On the other hand, I wonder if the slghtly injured players are having a harder time playing at a top level.

Sadly this isn't too out of the ordinary. Lots of guys can be banged up by the end of the season unless your team is very fortunate.

This game just confirms what last Mondays game tells me....THIS TEAM SUCKS AND WONT GO ANYWHERE!!!! This team is to predictable on offense and the defense
couldnt sack a high school qb.

Arquimedez Bozo wrote: They don't suck, but they're definitely very ordinary right now for the 2 reasons he mentioned. The complete lack of a pass rush is absolutely killing the defense. The DB's end up having to try and cover for 5-7 seconds, and there's just no way you can consistently do that against NFL receivers. Offensively, there's no imagination to the play calling at all. The same plays they run in the 1st quarter are the same ones they're running in the 3rd. The one thing Charlie Weis was a master at was calling plays A, B and C early to set up plays X, Y and Z later in the game. It's why Bill Walsh and Mike Shanahan used to script the first 15 plays. They wanted the defense to see all kinds of different looks right away so that they could play off them later in the game. Despite what Vince Lombardi said, it doesn't matter how well you execute if the defense knows what routes the receivers are going to run. There needs to be some kind of deception in the passing game so that defenders are forced to make a choice on where to cover. In general, I think they're far too caught up in the 2007 mindset of blowing defenses away and have gotten away from the methodical, precise, kill you with a thousand papercuts offense that was so effective in the first half of the decade. And for shit's sake, where the hell are the damn screens??

BB better draft some guys that can play the front 7 this offseason. You can't expect the DB's to cover for an eternity and expect to win.

...or draft a real corner. Don't get me wrong, I love Butler as a future #2 CB, but we need a shutdown corner. We can probably nab some OLB/DE depth with
our plethora of 2nd-rounders...maybe find a diamond in the rough there. Our top need is definitely corner, though, on defense, if the right one is available
with our first pick.

The DB's are fine. And finding shutdown corners are difficult to find. They don't come around very often. This is pretty much on the pass rush. They
are the ones that aren't doing the secondary any favors with their pathetic pass rush.

It's too bad we don't have the Raiders first round pick this year instead. We would be able to get Ndamukong Suh. I was watching him against Texas and
I have never seen a defensive lineman take over the game like that. A more realistic player, maybe Brandon Spikes or Sergio Kindle.

Not sure if he can play end, but I wouldn't think they'd pick him, considering they may or may not bring Wilfork back, and they just picked Brace pretty highly last year. Outside linebackers and cornerbacks should be thought about in our upcoming draft way before linemen. |

The Patriots have never had an outstanding pass rush defensive line. Belichick drafts the guys who are run stoppers which is not a bad thing it's just our
blitzing and other defensive schemes are not getting enough pressure on the QB. I personally would love to draft some defensive ends who can get some pressure
in the back field, I mean there hasn't been a defensive lineman from the Patriots who has been near the top of the sacks list since I can remember.
The Patriots have made it clear that they don't want to pay big money for a corner back -- Ty Law, Asante Samuel (7 picks this year) |

I love our safeties, but honestly, CB is a big problem. Everyone has praised Leigh Bodden this season, but from what I've seen (especially the two games I
was at live), he just doesn't get it done enough in coverage against quick receivers, not to mention he's likely gone anyway next season. Sure some of
the blame lies on the lack of pressure applied to opposing QBs, but quick receivers can gain separation from Bodden in short-medium situations with relative
ease. He plays too tight when he is outmatched quickness-wise, and gives up too much space for curls in shorter situations.
Maybe I was too spoiled by Asante Samuel (clearly not just a system corner) and the need to have a shutdown corner on this team. Leigh Bodden, despite his ability to sniff out the ball and make big plays at times, just isn't cutting it for me. I'm sure no one is too excited by 2 of Springs/Butler/Wilhite/Wheatley as our starting tandem in 2010. And that's coming from a big Butler fan. |
