Guy, at this point I agree he won't be on the 25-man roster when the season starts -- he'll be in AAA. But I don't think they'll trade him now
this offseason, because I don't think anybody will give the Sox anything for him, or treat him as having any significant value in a larger trade.

Its an upgrade, but a healthy Lowrie is an upgrade from Scutaro. I hope a multi year deal for a 34 year old will not keep Tito from playing the better player.

Keep in mind that Scutaro provides a ton of flexibility to the club. He can play 2B, SS, 3B and LF.
Also keep in mind that we are likely giving up a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Scutaro. I'm not in love with the move, but I definitely understand it and if his OBP and SLG increases are real, he could be a bargain for two years until Iglesias is ready. |

I wonder how much of this is due to the fact that Scutaro is revered in his hometown of San Felipe.

This was a move of necessity; Scutaro was the best available shortstop for this team to contend in 2010. There is no way to even speculate what a
"healthy" Jed Lowrie would produce, considering we have only seen a fully healthy Jed Lowrie in one of his four full seasons as a professional
('07), split between AA and AAA.

We couldnt go into the spring counting on him but if he spends April and May in AAA and proves himself healthy is there a SS controversy? I guess its good that they can both play other positions. The best part about this signing is we can forget about the SS position for the rest of the winter. Lets go get Holliday and Beltre at the meetings monday. |

1. Jed Lowrie is undependable. Even I admit that at this point.
2. The pressure will be taken off this move when we sign Matt Holliday within the next 10 days. 3. I like to say, "It's-a-me, Scutaro" in the Mario voice. 4. There was once a LLWS team from Venezuela whose players all named Marco Scutaro as their favorite player. This was in his Mets or A's days. 5. I hate him. 6. I love him.

Good point Temple, the added revenue streams created by the fans in San Felipe will surely offset the millions of dollars spent by the Sox. I mean the press
coverage on this is going to be ridiculous.
I'm OK with a 2 year deal in the 12-15 million range if this was determined to be their best option. I was a Polanco supporter, but keeping Pedrioa at 2B has some benifits. If it's 3 years and anything close to 20 million this is flat out a bad idea. I don't mind them spending some money in the short term, I'm not that concerned with the pick if they sign Holliday, the Sox have shown they can acquire some damn good talent after the first couple rounds. |

So after we sign Holliday, which is such an inevitability at this point, it's not even worth discussing, we will still have a lot of chips left for a
trade. All of our chips actually. Because I still think Theo isn't happy with that 1B/3B situation.

I like the move, but would have liked to wait longer in case something better came up. With Toronto's signing of Gonzalez, and Polanco going to the
Phillies, I think the Sox saw their window closing on the middle infielders.
I agree that another type-A signing would make this move a million times more palatable. We also don't know how cheaply he came to us.

It's not my money. But if you're going to throw money around, why not do it last year when Sabathia and Tex were available? No excuse not to pay top dollar for top talent when you're pissing away $20 million a year on rent-a-shortstops and reclamation pitchers. Oh well, Scutaro should be a nice utility player at worst, and maybe he'll have a good year for us. And I assume this means we're signing Holliday, and maybe Mike Gonzalez or Soriano as well. Hell, why not all three? Any bets on who has a better next two years, AGon or Marco? Alex is younger, clearly a better fielder, and has been a consistent 1.5 WAR player.

templeUsox wrote:If you're right, I love the signing. If we re-sign Bay, I'm pretty "meh" about it, because a potential 1st rounder for Bay (on top of the Wagner pick) makes losing some top pieces that much easier. I'd rather sign Beltre and trade for Prince Fielder (DH) or Roy if we get Holliday. Scutaro is a solid fielder due for some regression in the coming 2 years, so I would definitely like to see the infield defense improved some more. EDIT: I'm preparing myself for a gross overpay in terms of dollars, but I think we can all live with it considering it's only two years with Iglesias possibly knocking on the door after year two.

SoxSail wrote: If something better comes up Scutaro's salary isn't going to prevent that from happening. As others have mentioned, the best part of signing Scutaro is that even if he sucks as a starting SS, he's proven himself to be a really good, versatile utility IF, which I guess is a pretty high floor. |

As joshv mentioned earlier today, it's not a sexy move, but it was the best move available to fill the SS hole. And unless the AAV is absurdly high, there
is nothing in the player or the contract that would prevent the team from making a move to get a better SS should such an opportunity come along at any point
in the contract. The worst case scenario is that they've signed a very reasonable stopgap solution to what's been an on-going problem, with the not
unreasonable upside that the recent offensive gains continue to some degree. There's certainly nothing about this move to really get in a wad over.

Since the third year is a mutual option, I figure it's probably something like this: Sox option is for starting SS money, Scutaro option is for money that
will at least make him palatable as a utility IF/caddy for Iglesias or whoever is at short.
