Wait, honest question: do they have a reason to baby Britton more than other Greenville pitchers (a la Stolmy, Kelly etc. last year)?

He did just have Tommy John surgery. As WCP mentioned though, he'll be pretty far removed from it by the time the season rolls around. I've noticed
that the FO tends to be less agressive with guys coming off injuries. In contrast to Kelly, Stolmy, etc Britton will likely be on a pitch count limit whereas
those guys were on an innings limit. There probably won't be a whole lot of "babying" done, but I doubt they just let him pitch without some
control.

Adam Foster, the guy who runs Project Prospect, has his top 15 shortstop list out. Iglesias was 4th, Navarro was
14th, and Renfroe was 15th.

Great stuff, thanks for the link Greek/AB.
I was surprised to see, as one of the other posters in the PP forum noted, the lack of Lee (CHC) on that list. Not that he's a top 100 prospect, but I would expect him above Navarro / Renfroe. Either way, good stuff....

Two weeks or so until BA posts their ranking of the Sox top 10 (Dec 14th). After seeing Lars drop so much in the BP rankings, it will be interesting to see
where he falls on the BA rankings.

One thing to keep in mind, and Jim Callis kinda touched on it, is his age for AA. While there's a bunch of other prospects his age, please keep in mind
that if Lars chose to go to college, this would be his Jr. season. If he was draft eligible, people could be talking about him the same way they talked about
Dustin Ackley last year or Yonder Alonso the year before. You know his power numbers would be higher hitting with aluminum. So yeah, we need to give Lars a
benefit of the doubt or a mulligan for last years' struggles. That said, he still deserves to be ranked in the bottom half of the top 10. It's the what
have you done for me lately syndrome.

2008-2009 would have been Lars' junior season. 2009-10 would be his senior season.

Oops!
Thought he was drafted '07. Scratch that. He still probably would have been drafted in the top half of the 1st round and would've played at a Low A/High A affiliate if signed on time. |

BorisMan wrote:I think Jacoby Ellsbury would be the best recent comp as an elite college draftee. Ellsbury played at Lowell after signing, although Lars probably could have handled Greenville and may have been pushed there with McGuiness in Lowell. Ellsbury started his first full season at High-A and advanced to Portland midseason, which is likely what Lars the 2009 College Draftee would have done. So, point stands, he's well ahead of where he'd be if he'd gone to Berkeley.

Players will graduate (Bowden, Tazawa, Richardson seem like certainties, and some of the other Portland guys could move quickly) and I've got a feeling we're going to see a few guys packaged in a trade before the start of the year. Lars Anderson also asked me to say that sometimes, players take a step backward. Not saying the system WON'T improve, and picking up a few extra picks definitely helps, but it's not as much of a sure thing as it may seem.

Solid prospect, yes but not as he was a year ago. Also with Richardson, the latest projections don't have him as much more than a solid RP, again, him graduating probably won't drastically hurt their rankings. |

I'm just saying it's never as easy as take System A and add Draft Picks B to get the system's Value C next offseason. I do have to admit I LOVE the possibility of two top-20 picks (plus two supp picks) if the Mariners sign Bay though.

No small point on the above discussion. As well as players unexpectedly falling, there's also the distinct possibility of players rising unexpectedly.
Place, Amanzar, Tejeda, Middlebrooks, Fuentes, Britton, etc. are all still very young and still have the potential to significantly improve their current
status.
Overall, we are comparatively young and another year of development means significant improvement in our overall status. We just need a little more patience than we are accustomed to. The depth of toolsy prospects is our strongpoint.
