Veteran Member Posts: 1187 12/01/09 8:49 PM	I'd rather have Lowrie playing everyday, not to mention that it is in our best interest to have his cost-controlled years with the major league club coming when he is both healthy (more probable if he can demonstrate durability in AA in 2010) and can contribute in a bigger role.

The team reached preliminary agreement Tuesday with free-agent left-hander Billy Wagner on a one-year, $7 million contract with a vesting option for a second season, according to a major-league source. The deal will become official once Wagner passes a physical, which he will take in Atlanta on Wednesday. The vesting option, worth $6.5 million, will become guaranteed if Wagner finishes 50 games next season. Link Lets hope they don't sign a better FA. That's the draft pick jackpot though. 20th pick overall. It makes the entire Wagner acquisition worth it. Great move.

Valverde- Redundant because of Wagner. Lackey- SP is their strongpoint. Don't have the money to get Lackey. Scutaro- ??? but doubt it. Cris Carter for the 20th overall pick? Best move of the Theo regime.

No Sox listed (although as noted above, we won this morning when Billy Went Down to Georgia), but a few that we've been discussing: Winners: Placido Polanco: The 34-year-old, two-time Gold Glover wasn't offered arbitration by the Tigers, a mild surprise that should make it much easier for him to find steady work in 2010. There are a number of appealing options at second base in this year's free-agent class, so the specter of losing a first-round draft pick to sign Polanco -- a solid, but unspectacular infielder -- likely would have scared off suitors who could have turned to guys like Ronnie Belliard or Felipe Lopez without fear of losing a pick. Orlando Hudson: Word is the O-Dawg wanted out of Los Angeles, so he wouldn't have accepted an offer anyway, but L.A. not extending one his way can only help him in a crowded second base market. Hudson didn't sign until Feb. 22 because he was a Type A who didn't accept arbitration from the Diamondbacks. It's unlikely he'll have to wait that long again to find his 2010 home. Losers: Marco Scutaro: Either way he's probably the top shortstop on the market, but since he's not as known of a quantity, Scutaro's value will suffer some because the team that signs him will have to give up picks. Anyway, a good read, give it a look if you have a sec..... Madness is like gravity....all you need is a little push.

Veteran Member Posts: 4383 12/02/09 11:37 AM Veteran Member	Given the arb results, my suspicion is that the offseason is going to look something like this: Bay signs somewhere other than with us, maybe fairly early. And probably not with the Yankees. Once Bay signs, the Yankees go hard after Holliday. He just fits too well for them. The signing will take most of the winter, because Boras will try to create competition for the Yankees, but once the Yankees' base offer is known nobody else, including the Sox, will really challenge them. You might hear noise about the Sox being in on the auction, but it's more Boras trying to drum up competition than anything else. The Sox will then sign Nady as a platoon partner for Hermida, and deal with the OF issue that way. They sign Polanco or Hudson for 2B, move Pedroia to SS for the time being, and either sign or don't sign Beltre, however that shakes out. Frankly, either Lowell or Beltre at 3B is a meh for me. The Sox sign Harden at some point for rotation insurance, but don't trade for Halladay. The whole Halladay business is a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing as far as the Sox are concerned. All that said, I hope that I am completely wrong, and that the Sox find a way to work with FLA this winter, strip the top of the system, and get Hanley. Of course, if Hanley is acquired, that makes a Nady/Harden approach that much more likely, with probably another pitcher signed for more rotation insurance (but forget Lackey).

How ridiculous would it get if the Sox could get two top 20 picks. Kind of a longshot I guess but there was some buzz about him possibly wanting to sign with Seattle last summer.

(18, 20, 38, 41) The sox haven't had that flexibility since 05 when they had (23, 26, 42, 45, 47, 57). The 05 draft has produced 4 players who got decent time on the 09 roster along with Hansen and Jon Egan. You could see some real talent put into this system if things go to plan
