I'd rather have Lowrie playing everyday, not to mention that it is in our best interest to have his cost-controlled years with the major league club coming
when he is both healthy (more probable if he can demonstrate durability in AA in 2010) and can contribute in a bigger role.

I think we just ended Billy Wagner's career.

I hope this isn't Paul Byrd 2.0 (with the added compensation making teams avoid him).

Why would a team sign Scutaro (and we're fearful it might be the Sox) but everyone avoid Wagner? I don't see how that makes any sense. We're not
talking about Byrd 2.0

Just waiting on the Giants and TB's decision on Russ Springer. The news front on the Giants has been oddly silent. Not even a hint of speculation.

It's so absurd that a type a reliever nets the same compensation as CC Sabathia. Letting teams trade draft picks, and thereby facilitating sign and trades
for 2nd and 3rd rounders would make so much more sens. Gaaaaaahhhh!

tdrowe wrote: Fixed. They do that, and I'd actually be okay with Pedroia as the everyday SS for this season (all of this is contingent on signing Holliday/Bay, of course).
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

I've never been so happy to be so wrong.
The Braves did not take long to find a new closer.Link Lets hope they don't sign a better FA. That's the draft pick jackpot though. 20th pick overall. It makes the entire Wagner acquisition worth it. Great move. |

So unless the Braves also sign one of Holliday, Valverde, Bay, Lackey, or Scutaro the 20th pick is ours? Am I reading that right. If so, unreal.
I really don't see the Braves being a player at all for any of the aforementioned players. Great news. edit: I guess them signing Bay wouldn't be such a bad thing either.

Yea, cross Bay off, since we would obviously still get their pick.
Holliday- Too rich for their blood. Valverde- Redundant because of Wagner. Lackey- SP is their strongpoint. Don't have the money to get Lackey. Scutaro- ??? but doubt it. Cris Carter for the 20th overall pick? Best move of the Theo regime. |

This made my day off-season. Thank you, Frank Wren.
edit: It's too bad the '10 Draft isn't as deep as the '05 Draft. This is going to be an amazing day one draft day.

It wouldn't be so bad if Seattle signed Bay to go with that news assuming we get Holliday signed.

Winners and Losers from yesterday, per FanHouse.
No Sox listed (although as noted above, we won this morning when Billy Went Down to Georgia), but a few that we've been discussing: Winners: Losers: Anyway, a good read, give it a look if you have a sec.....

Given the arb results, my suspicion is that the offseason is going to look something like this:
Bay signs somewhere other than with us, maybe fairly early. And probably not with the Yankees. Once Bay signs, the Yankees go hard after Holliday. He just fits too well for them. The signing will take most of the winter, because Boras will try to create competition for the Yankees, but once the Yankees' base offer is known nobody else, including the Sox, will really challenge them. You might hear noise about the Sox being in on the auction, but it's more Boras trying to drum up competition than anything else. The Sox will then sign Nady as a platoon partner for Hermida, and deal with the OF issue that way. They sign Polanco or Hudson for 2B, move Pedroia to SS for the time being, and either sign or don't sign Beltre, however that shakes out. Frankly, either Lowell or Beltre at 3B is a meh for me. The Sox sign Harden at some point for rotation insurance, but don't trade for Halladay. The whole Halladay business is a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing as far as the Sox are concerned. All that said, I hope that I am completely wrong, and that the Sox find a way to work with FLA this winter, strip the top of the system, and get Hanley. Of course, if Hanley is acquired, that makes a Nady/Harden approach that much more likely, with probably another pitcher signed for more rotation insurance (but forget Lackey). |

That's why I hope Bay really wants to be closer to home. The closest place to British Columbia just happens to be Seattle and their #18 pick. How
ridiculous would it get if the Sox could get two top 20 picks. Kind of a longshot I guess but there was some buzz about him possibly wanting to sign with
Seattle last summer.

It is not out of the realm of possibility the sox end up with the following picks. (18, 20, 38, 41) The sox haven't had that flexibility since 05 when they
had (23, 26, 42, 45, 47, 57). The 05 draft has produced 4 players who got decent time on the 09 roster along with Hansen and Jon Egan. You could see some real
talent put into this system if things go to plan
